That brings up the issue of newborn calves and their copper. The only time calves receive copper is prior to birth from the cow. They must live with that inherited copper until they start eating grass on their own. Copper does not transfer through the milk so those calves are not replenishing any deficiencies they may have been born with. If a fetus or newborn is deficient or low, we know that cow was also deficient. We can also see sick calves in a couple months when their own copper levels are even further depleted, which is usually around vaccination or summer turn out time. What a terrible time to be immune deficient! (Remember, the â€œdo not respond well to vaccinesâ€ and â€œget sick easilyâ€ parts from earlier?)

There are many reasons why a tooth may require extraction. Some of these reasons include fracture of the crown or root, receding gums, severe periodontal disease resulting in loss of bone supporting the tooth, infection of the tooth root or bone surrounding the tooth. Sometimes overcrowding of teeth results in more â€œstrategicâ€ teeth being put at risk for developing one of the above conditions. Our goal is to save teeth if possible. However, in certain cases teeth that have lost bone attachment from chronic disease are unlikely to heal and need to be removed. For teeth with more than 50% of supporting bone loss, endodontic disease, crowding or deep cavities, extraction is indicated. In order to extract a tooth, oral surgery is involved.
Veterinary Surgery
Dr. Erica Koller grew up right here in Edgemont, SD, went to South Dakota State University in Brookings and attended veterinary school at Iowa State University. She is very comfortable in small animal surgery and bovine obstetrics. Since she is the daughter of a local rancher, she understands importance of animal well being and herd health in this area. She has also spent some time traveling to other parts of the United States and the world through veterinary medicine. She has a love of teaching and molding the next generation. She has developed an externship program for veterinary students to experience a rural veterinary clinic. Her family, including husband Dustin Ross, son Tucker and daughter Harper, are very active in the community. She loves to share her passion for rural values and traditions through modern technologies.
