I have multiple disabilities & use a walker because of Multiple Sclerosis. I went to the post office at 3710 Shannon Rd, Durham, NC 27707 to mail a grievance against the lawyer who hasn’t settled mom’s estate in 8 months. I have been so depressed just getting dressed & leaving the house is an effort.



I am standing at the desk in the Post Office filling out the slip for Express Mail when someone working in the Post Office BELLOWS at me, “Take the dog out of the Post Office, No dogs in the Post Office”. I told him not to yell at me & explained that she is a Service Dog Still yelling he tells me “only dogs for the blind are allowed in the post office” I tell him NO Service Dogs have the same rights as guide dogs for the blind. Now he comes from behind the counter & gets in my face, “I told you to remove the dog from the Post Office only Guide Dogs for the blind are allowed in the Post Office”. Again I tell him that he is WRONG & explain that there are different types of Service Dogs; seizure alert dogs, autism alert dogs, diabetic alert dogs (what my dog is) etc. He tells me he doesn’t care what kind of dog I have she is not a guide dog for the blind & must leave. He tells me he hung “the sign” himself. He points to a sign in the outer lobby in which it does say “only dogs assisting blind people”. I tell him the sign is WRONG as is he & the sign is also ILLEGAL. He orders me to leave & is getting louder & more nasty. Several Patrons in the Post Office DEFENDED ME saying I WAS RIGHT & COULD have the dog in the Post Office.



The man DIDN’T CARE & INSISTED I LEAVE. I DID NOT leave I called “911”. They AGREED that I was correct & said they were sending an officer. They asked me to wait outside until the officer arrived.



Well ABOUT 6 OFFICERS showed up. They AGREED with me & looked at the sign which they said HAD TO BE REMOVED. They went inside to speak to the people in the Post Office. Almost an hour after arriving I am FINALLY allowed in the Post Office WITH MY DOG to complete my business.
