Arthritis
Occasionally arthroscopy is used in inflammatory conditions (e.g. Rheumatoid Arthritis) to help reduce the amount of inflamed synovium (joint lining) that is producing excess joint fluid. This procedure is called a synovectomy. After the surgery a drain is inserted into the knee and patients generally require one or two nights in hospital.

Ultrasound
A routine X-Ray of the knee, which includes a standing weight-bearing view is usually required. An MRI scan which looks at the cartilages and soft tissues may be needed if the diagnosis is unclear. There is little value in the use of Ultrasound in investigating knee problems.
MRI
Diagnosing joint injuries and disease begins with a thorough medical history, physical examination, and usually X-rays. Additional tests such as an MRI, or CT also scan may be needed. Through the arthroscope, a final diagnosis is made which may be more accurate than through "open" surgery or from X-ray studies.
Radiology
Our practice houses a comprehensive radiology department with facilities for Xrays, Bone Densitometry, and Body Composition. CT scans, Ultrasound, MRI, bone scans, and interventional radiology are available at the hospital or other external facilities.

Arthroscopy
The benefits of arthroscopy involve smaller incisions, faster healing, a more rapid recovery, and less scarring. Arthroscopic surgical procedures are often performed on an outpatient basis and the patient is able to return home on the same day.

Knee Replacement
Combining patellofemoral and unicompartmental resurfacing may be an option for patients suffering with arthritis in two compartments of the knee, including the patellofemoral compartment and either the medial or lateral compartments, when non-surgical treatments have failed to treat their knee pain. Typically this is reserved for a small group of young patients for whom a total knee replacement may be undesirable, although select elderly patients may also be candidates. Robotically assisted techniques are used for the procedure to enhance the accuracy.
Knee Arthroscopy
The arthroscope is a fiber-optic telescope that can be inserted into a joint (commonly the knee, shoulder and ankle) to evaluate and treat a number of conditions. A camera is attached to the arthroscope and the picture is visualized on a TV monitor. Most arthroscopic surgery is performed as day surgery and is usually done under general anesthesia. Knee arthroscopy is common, and millions of procedures are performed each year around the world.

Physical Therapy
All in-patients are seen by Dr. Handal in the post-operative period. If necessary, a post-operative patient who is transferred to a rehab facility will be attended to not only by the nursing and physical therapy staff, but also an internist and rehabilitation doctor as part of the team.
