Ophthalmology
Cortland Eye Center was originally owned by Dr. Dean Mitchell who began the ophthalmology practice in 1982. In 1997, the building was enlarged and an Optometrist and an Optician joined the staff. When he retired in 2006, Dr. Jacqueline Fergerson took ownership of Cortland Eye Center. We have continued to grow and most recently (2009) added another Optometrist to our staff.
Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration is a deterioration or breakdown of the macula.The macula is a small area in the retina at the back of the eye that allows you to see fine details clearly and perform activities such as reading and driving. When the macula does not function correctly, your central vision can be affected by blurriness, dark areas or distortion. Macular degeneration affects your ability to see near and far, and can make some activities-like threading a needle or reading-difficult or impossible.

Post-op day at Cortland Eye Center is very exciting, not only for our patients, but also for our staff. We never tire of hearing about the improved vision of our patients following cataract surgery.
