Dental Examination
For our younger patients (under age 4), the first visit will be an “easy” visit. This visit will include a dental examination either in the dental chair or as a knee to knee exam, followed by a toothbrush cleaning, and then we will apply a fluoride treatment to your child’s teeth.
X-rays
Radiographs (x-rays) are a necessary part of your child’s dental diagnostic process. Without them, certain cavities will be missed. They also help survey developing teeth, evaluate results of an injury, or plan for orthodontic treatment. If dental problems are found and treated early, dental care is more comfortable for your child, and more affordable for you.

Teeth Cleaning
From your child’s first cleaning and exam to advanced orthodontic treatments, we strive to partner with you for life to help your child create and maintain a healthy, beautiful smile.
Fluoride Treatment
We want this visit to be an introduction to the dental office and want it to be very positive for your child. Based on your child’s reaction to this first visit, we will determine if another “easy” visit is needed or if we can schedule the next continuing care (recall) visit with the hygienist for more of a “typical” dental visit which would include radiographs (if needed), cleaning which involves polishing the teeth, and a fluoride treatment.
Dental Sealants
A sealant is a clear or shaded plastic material that is applied to the chewing surfaces (grooves) for the back teeth (premolars and molars), where most cavities in children can form. This sealant acts as a barrier to food, plaque, and acid, thus protecting the decay-prone areas of the teeth. However, cavities between the teeth are not protected by sealants. As long as there is no cavity in the tooth, sealants will be recommended for all children.
Space Maintainers
A lower lingual arch is a space maintainer for the lower teeth. It maintains the molars where they are, it does not move them. This is fabricated by placing bands on the molars and connecting them to a wire that fits up against the inside of the lower teeth. It keeps the molars from migrating forward and prevents them from blocking off the space of teeth that develop later. This is used when you have the early loss of baby teeth or when you have lower teeth that are slightly crowded in a growing child and you do not want to remove any permanent teeth to correct the crowding.

Crowns
Find the tooth. Handle the tooth by the crown, not the root portion. You may rinse the tooth, but DO NOT wipe or handle the tooth unnecessarily. Inspect the tooth for fractures, if there are no fractures, try to reinsert it into the socket. Have the patient hold the tooth in place by biting on a gauze.

Pulpotomy
In a primary tooth, if a cavity is too large to restore with a filling, a crown may be recommend or the tooth may need to come out. If the cavity is too large and has involved the nerve of the tooth, then the nerve will be removed (pulpotomy) along with the cavity, and a crown will be placed. A crown can either be tooth colored or stainless steel. For front teeth, white crowns are routinely used for esthetics. For back teeth, stainless steel crowns are used for their durability and longevity. T he purpose of the crown is to help provide structure for the tooth, to help maintain space for permanent teeth to erupt properly, and to help protect the remaining tooth.

For most people, a beautiful smile is the most obvious benefit of orthodontics. In addition to straightening teeth, orthodontics helps create good jaw relationships. Since every patient is different, we realize their needs will be different as well.
Braces
For our orthodontic patients, as always please follow instructions to take good care of your braces and keep them clean. As long as you do this, the only consequence should be a hopefully brief pause in your treatment progress. If you are wearing rubber bands on your braces and need more, call our office and we will make them available to you.

General Dentistry
Dr. Kalke grew up in Southern Utah. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Utah, and attended dental school at CASE Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. After completing an Advance Education in General Dentistry at CASE, he decided that helping children was where his passion was and chose to specialize in pediatric dentistry.
