Rabies vaccination may be given biannually once an animal has received two vaccinations within 12 months. We recommend boosting DHLPP in dogs and FVRCP and FeLV annually. We also recommend annually testing dogs for heartworm infestation and recommend that heartworm and flea/tick prevention be given monthly for the pet’s entire life.

Infection Treatment

Leptospirosis Treatment
Vaccines to prevent infectious diseases should be given every 3-4 weeks starting at 6 weeks of age. Puppy vaccines include DHPP (distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, and parainfluenza) and DHLPP (all previous plus leptospirosis).Kitten vaccines include FVRCP (feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and panleukopenia) and possibly FeLV (feline leukemia virus) if they will be exposed to unknown status cats. Kittens should be tested for the Feline Leukemia virus before starting their vaccinations.Rabies vaccination is given after 12 weeks of age. We also recommend a fecal parasite examination for intestinal parasites on the initial visit.During the initial visit, we also will discuss heartworm and flea/tick prevention which should be given monthly and continued for life. Heartworms are transmitted by mosquitos and densely populated in the Bryan/College Station area.

Kidney Disease Treatment
Besides the local pain of dental problems, infections in the mouth can lead to respiratory, heart, and kidney disease. Similar to humans (who also brush once to twice daily), pets may need dental cleanings every 6-12 months to keep their teeth healthy. In order to perform cleanings thoroughly, scale and polish pets’ teeth, they must be fully anesthetized.

If spayed before first heat cycle, females have less than 10% chance of getting mammary cancer. Also spaying eliminates risk of ovarian and uterine cancer, uterine infection, and unwanted pregnancies. Neutering eliminates the risk of testicular cancer, reduces the rate of prostate disease, and if done early enough reduces marking and aggressive behavior. Intact males are more likely to try to escape backyards to find mates and may end up getting into fights, lost, hit by a car, or in some cases shot.
