Macular Degeneration
Age-Related Macular Degeneration, also called AMD, is a disease associated with people over the age of 60. This disease destroys the sharp, central vision that we use in everyday activities such as reading and driving. AMD affects the macula; the part of the eye that is located in the center of the retina and allows the eye to register fine details. It gives us our sharpest central vision (20/20) and our best color perception.

Cataracts
Cataracts are increasingly common as our population ages and lives longer. They’re the leading cause of vision loss among adults age 60 or older. In simplest terms, a cataract is a clouding of the eye’s crystalline lens. A cataract can be relatively mild and cause limited visual impairment or can be significant or extreme and thus block the passage of light to the retina, causing severe vision problems. A cataract usually develops slowly and painlessly so that your vision can be affected without you realizing it.
Cataract Surgery
Modern cataract surgery has evolved rapidly over the past few years. It is considered one of the safest and most effective medical procedures used today, giving patients more choice in lens options. By combining the most advanced lenses for distance and near vision or astigmatism correction with cataract surgery, patients are regaining the vision they had in their 20s.
Eye Exam
Keratoconus can usually be diagnosed with a slit-lamp examination as well as corneal topography which precisely measures the curvature of the cornea. Your optometrist will look for signs such as corneal thinning, stress lines, and scarring at the apex of the corneal cone. Keratoconus, especially in the early stages, can be difficult to diagnose and its symptoms could be associated with other eye problems. Simply recognizing symptoms does not by itself diagnose the condition. Only a complete eye examination by a qualified expert can diagnose the condition in its earliest stages when it is easiest to treat and correct.

Thyroid
We use several methods to assess proper ocular motility or eye movements such as: do your eyes move together? Strabismus is a common childhood motility problem, but misalignment can occur in adults too. Patients with thyroid disease or orbital trauma can often have ocular motility problems.
Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy is an eye disease caused by diabetes. Though diabetes is a leading cause of blindness, severe vision loss can usually be prevented with regular and timely eye examinations. Patients with diabetes should be examined at least once a year, regardless of symptoms or sugar control. With regular dilated exams, the chance of severe vision loss is less than 1 percent over the patient’s lifetime.

Ultrasound
The surgeon makes an incision and uses ultrasound waves to break up the hard, yellow proteins that form the cataract, leaving the lens membrane in place.

Eyelid Surgery
As we age, our bodies undergo changes, and our eyelids are no exception. Our eyelids are susceptible to a variety of environmental and age-related conditions which range from being a mild nuisance to being potentially life threatening. The team at Malouf Eye Center is fully equipped to handle routine eyelid surgeries, such as chalazion excisions and lesion biopsies.

Skin Cancer
Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. There are various risk factors that are associated with this condition, but most commonly increased age, sun exposure and skin type are the biggest culprits. During your complete exam, the eyelids are always thoroughly evaluated for any concerning lesions. If found, we may recommend a biopsy to help aid in the diagnosis when a suspicious lesion is present.
Lesions
A chalazion, sometimes referred to as a "stye," is a bump on the eyelid caused by a clogged oil gland. These bumps are very common and can affect almost anyone at any age. A chalazion is not harmful, but can sometimes appear similar to cancerous lesions of the eyelid, so a proper evaluation is important. Most chalazions will go away on their own. Often times, we prescribe eye drops or ointments to help with this. When medications fail, we also offer a variety of minimally invasive procedures to cure the problem. These procedures are done from an interior approach so that there will be no incision or scars on the outside of the eyelid, maintaining a pristine cosmetic approach.
