Engine Repair
We perform most automotive services including emissions, electrical and computer work. We do brakes, suspension and steering, drive axle and clutch work, timing belts and timing chains. We do AC and heating. We do engine work but rarely major overhaul or engine replacement.
Oil Change
I tend to be very cynical about fast oil change places and would never recommend anybody go to the likes of Jiffy Lube. BUT…there is an exception to everything — Lube Pit Stop on South Lamar. Locally owned business run with integrity, state safety inspections are done by the rules. We can’t come close to their turn-around time for basic maintenance services nor their fair and economical prices. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Here at Don’s Automotive we certainly do not advocate ignoring this periodic maintenance item.. However, far more critical than changing oil is making sure that the oil level is within safe limits. If you own a Tesla there is no conventional engine and no engine oil level dipstick. If you own certain luxury European vehicles oil level is monitored electronically. Most everything else has a dipstick. Engines develop oil leaks that can be small or large. Engine burn some amount of oil with no external drips. It is entirely possible and not that abnormal for an engine to need oil level topped off when only halfway or less to the time for an oil change. Engines are destroyed if driven a mile or two with zero oil pressure due to lack of oil. Modern engines have variable valve timing systems to optimize power and fuel efficiency. The hydraulic engine controls for this system receive computer commands to operate valves and servos that are dependent on engine oil pressure. Hence as oil level drops and oil pressure drops out a check engine light and poor running is often the first sign of low oil. Please do not wait that long. Every year we inform more than one client that their engine suffered major damage from lack of oil and given the cost of engine replacement the car should go to a salvage yard. Don’t let this be you! We do not service any Europoean or British vehicles. We do not service very old vehicles. We do not service grossly decrepit vehicles. We do not do diesel work with the exception of certain model Ford Powerstroke, paint & body, glass, upholstery, tire repair, state inspection or mufflers.
Wheel Alignment
There is no one machine that does it all–anywhere! As a general rule, noises, vibrations, handling and braking behavior can’t be diagnosed by means of a computer device. Exceptions would be that wheel alignment can be checked on a computerized wheel alignment rack and anti-lock brake system computers can be accessed with computer diagnostic equipment. Intermittent problems are the worst because the relevant system will probably test flawless if diagnosis it attempted when the problem is in remission. Believe me, the dealership faces this obstacle just as we do! Problems in computer operated systems often, but not always, leave “trouble codes” in the computer’s memory. Unfortunately these are more hints or guidelines than absolutely specific diagnosis. At Don’s Automotive we are more than happy to refer a problem elsewhere if we feel another facility has an advantage in finding the problem.

My first car was 1979 Buick Park Avenue that had previously been a bomber car driven on asphalt at Longhorn Speedway here in Austin. Since I had just turned 50 I gave it the #50. I did minor rework on it to make the suspension suitable for dirt and fitted it with the proper dirt wheels and tires. The motor blew the first night I had it out in practice, but I was fortunate enough to get a “grandpa’s car” good used motor from a 72 Cutlass from my sponsor, Joey Whitehead at Hiway 71 Auto Salvage. The used Olds 350 engine performed well that season. I ran the car a second year by which time it was pretty well battered and used up.

Probably not! The great bulk of your car’s electrical system operates on 12 volts or less. 12 volts is not enough “electrical pressure” to push substantial current through water. While enough current can flow through water at this voltage to disrupt delicate computer circuitry, the draw is not 1% of what it takes to blow a fuse. Water causes problems in low voltage circuits by corroding electrical contacts causing poor connections and a LACK of current through the circuit. The water could corrode the contacts in a taillight socket and the bulb will not light up but it will NOT blow the taillight fuse. When we speak of the HIGH VOLTAGE part of the ignition system we have a very different story. 20,000+ volts is delivered to the spark plugs, this voltage being produced by the ignition coil. At this voltage, the slightest imperfection in insulation somewhere will divert the spark to ground or even the wrong spark plug with disastrous results in how the vehicle runs. If you car runs well on dry days but will not start or runs poorly after a night of rain it is a safe bet that somewhere in the high voltage (secondary) ignition system there are weak components. This could be plug wires with cracked insulation, a faulty ignition rotor or distributor cap, bad coil or bad spark plugs.
