At South Bellmore Veterinary Group in Bellmore, NY, we believe that one of the most important aspects of caring for your pet’s health is vaccinating him or her against possible diseases. There are a variety of diseases which affect our pets, and other animals, so proper vaccination is vital to protecting them from many types of illnesses.
Veterinary Ophthalmology
The South Bellmore Veterinary Group is equipped to treat and handle most of your pet’s eye care. We have the ability to diagnose and treat glaucoma, conjunctivitis and uveitis. We also routinely perform ophthalmologic surgery such as entropion/ectropion surgery, cherry-eye repair, conjuncival flaps and enucleations.
Nutritional Counseling
Obesity is a common problem among pets, as it can be easy to over-feed a pet that knows how to beg. But being overweight is a serious problem for animals, and can cause real health problems as they get older. With proper diet and exercise, all pets should be able to meet their dietary needs and be within a healthy weight range.
Comprehensive Examination
Our staff will get a chance to talk to you and see if you are having any trouble with your pet. We will also go over diet, preventative medicine, and exercise to ensure that your pet is as healthy as possible. Then, one of our veterinarians will do a complete physical examination on your pet. It is always good to have a baseline in case your pet ever becomes ill. We also want to monitor your pet’s weight, ensuring that your pet stays a healthy weight. It is much easier to start a diet when a pet is a pound overweight instead of fifteen! Our veterinarian will also look for any potential problems. Our goal is to catch any problems before they become major ones. The sooner that we are able to catch a problem, the easier it is to treat it and the more likely that your pet will make a full recovery!

Illness Treatment

Parasites Treatment and Control
Board your animal(s) with us and rest assured that they will not only be pampered but that they will be under the direct observation of your veterinarian. Animals must be up to date on all vaccinations (including Bordatella or kennel cough vaccination) and they must be on flea and tick preventative. New visitors are required to have a pre-boarding examination. These precautions are for the safety and health of both your pet and their neighbors in the hospital.
Pain Management
Skin Condition and Allergy Treatment
The South Bellmore Veterinary Group is equipped to treat and handle a full compliment of your pets dermatologic needs. Our in-house lab allows us to quickly diagnose and treat bacterial and fungal disease, ectoparasites such as demodectic and scabetic mange, ear problems, and allergy testing/shots. We have a full line of shampoos, ointments and flea and tick preventatives.

Infection Treatment

Bacterial and Viral Infection Treatment
The two most common ear problems are bacterial and yeast infections. Bacterial infections can cause extreme discomfort and lead to worse problems if not treated quickly. Bacterial infections are treated with antibiotics and can disappear within two weeks depending on the severity of the disease. Yeast infections cause very similar problems, but they are treated with antifungal medication instead. If either problem is forgotten about, your dog can end up with hematomas. A hematoma is a buildup of fluid in the pinna which will have to be surgically drained.

Arthritis Treatment
Dr. Foley attended Cornell University’s School of Agriculture and Life Sciences, where he first met his friend, Dr. Michael Ferber. Dr. Foley graduated in 1992 and stayed in Ithaca after graduation to continue working in Dr. Alan Nixon’s laboratory at the NYS College of Veterinary Medicine. Together they studied the efficacy of chondrocyte implantion to treat osteoarthritis and osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) lesions in horses. In 1994, Dr. Foley was accepted into the NYS College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University.

Our in-house blood analyzers allow us to quickly assist our experienced veterinarians in diagnosing and treating your pets medical problems. Diseases such as Addisons Disease, Cushings Disease, complicated and un-complicated diabetes mellitus are just a few of the diseases routinely diagnosed and treated right here in our facility.
Heart Disease Treatment
Our in house x-ray machine allows us instantaneous images to assist us in diagnosing and treating your pet. In addition we have a brand new ultrasound machine and EKG that allows us to interface with board-certified radiologists and cardiologists who can assist us in diagnosing and tailoring treatment to your pet.
Cancer Treatment

Wound and Fracture Care
Our surgical suite is second to none. Most surgeries are performed by our experienced veterinary surgeons. Abdominal and thoracic surgery, eye surgery, perianal surgery, total ear canal ablations, and a full compliment of orthopedic procedures such as fracture repair and cranial cruciate repair are just a few examples of what we do.

Dental Surgery
Our dental machine is equipped with an ultrasonic scaler and polisher and a high speed drill. This in combination with our digital dental x-ray unit allows us to routinely perform cleanings, dental exams, surgical extractions, root-planing and gingival resection. While under anesthesia for dental procedures your pet receives the same anesthetic monitoring that he/she would for the most in-depth surgical procedure.
Ophthalmic Surgery
Dr. Foley continues his role as Director of Medicine and Surgery of the practice today. His particular interests include dermatology, soft tissue, and ophthalmic surgery. Dr. Foley is passionate about educating his clients on issues such as over-vaccination and the dangers of early spay and neuter so that they can become active decision-makers in their own pet care.
