Frequency-specific micro-current is a technique that uses very low levels of electrical current to optimize membrane energy and health. Primary care includes the full range of services seen in most family practice clinics. Additionally, we have special programs that include allergy evaluation and treatment with sublingual (under the tongue versus a shot in the arm) immunotherapy, functional nutrition counseling, nutrigenomic counseling, preconception counseling and prenatal nutrition. We offer additional nutrition and wound care expertise.
Ear Infections
A functional medicine approach to health and medical treatment is a different way of thinking. Instead of just treating symptoms, we look upstream as far as we can to find the cause of health problems and not just ways to treat the symptoms or complaints. It is this approach that may discover a dairy or wheat allergy as a trigger for recurrent ear infections which had been treated many times previously by just giving an antibiotic. It is this approach that treats eczema, not by just giving a hydrocortisone cream for the rash, but by looking deeper for the cause. We may look at intestinal permeability and an unregulated immune system reaction. By addressing vitamin D and essential fatty acid undernutrition, we can improve intestinal friendly bacteria which actually treat the triggers for the eczema.
Family Practice
Bill Powell will be starting in clinic full time starting January 2017 and will be in clinic 4 days a week. He arrives from a thriving practice in Ellensburg Washington where he has been practicing family medicine and being an assistant professor in the medical school in Yakima. He has added training and is an expert in manipulative medicine as well. He is excited to join us because of the expert functional medicine education and practice our clinic provides. As with all of our clinicians he soon will be certified in Functional Medicine.
Emergency Care
Same-day or next day services are provided for our patients with the flexibility to see physician assistants or a nurse practitioner. Triage services are provided by phone or in the clinic at no cost. If the needs of the situation or the patient cannot be met by those services provided in the clinic, then a referral to the emergency room or the appropriate service will be made.
Infectious Diseases
Canada suggests <25 vaccinations, Mexico <30 vaccinations, and the US recommends 37 vaccinations before a child is 12 (WHO website). (Of the three North American continent countries, only Mexico adds vitamin A to their schedule to help with immunity development). Even though the US gives more vaccinations, our statistics for vaccinate-able infectious diseases do not always look better than the countries to the north or south.
Immunizations
Polio is nearly gone, small pox is nearly gone. Is it only because of vaccines? There is not an absolute yes or no answer. Do vaccines have nothing to do with it? Not an absolute yes or no answer. Where and when does the conversation take place that allows for the individual patient and their uniqueness? What are the risks or benefits of vaccinations for you, your child, or your grandchild? There is a lot of fear surrounding vaccinations, and is it one of our jobs to give perspective to patients and our community.

Leslie Stone, MD offers counseling on all common contraception techniques. She does provide surgical postpartum tubal ligation. Additionally, she offers waterbirth deliveries and vaginal birth after cesarean sections at Ashland Community Hospital.

Autism
For all of us this is an important discussion. I have had a family member crippled with polio (now vaccine preventable) as an 11 year old. This family member was in a coma for a week, and rehab for a year in New Jersey. I had a cousin who died hours after the initial symptoms of hemophilis meningitis (now vaccine preventable) in Corvallis, Oregon. I have held babies while dying of diphtheria in Thailand where they hadn't had the diphtheria vaccine, and have watched young children in our under-vaccinated community become ventilator dependent with pertussis in North Idaho. On the other hand, I have also watched more than one child following an MMR vaccine at 18 months (Medford, Oregon) develop severe fever and tumble down the autism spectrum disorder abyss. It is exactly because I live with these two extremes that a balanced conversation about vaccines has to continue.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Conditions as common as migraine headaches or as rare as Lou Gehrig's disease are worsened by poorly working mitochondria. Parkinson’s disease, tingling in the hands, ADHD and autism can be improved by improving the function of poorly working, energy-producing mitochondria. Winter weather can often exacerbate eczema on sensitive skin. Dry and cold air can increase the dryness of skin, leading to the need to moisturize. The decision to moisturize is a good one, however, most lotions have acetyl alcohol in them. Alcohol is a drying ingredient and can create a vicious cycle once applied.

Getting the right balance of nutrients allows us to balance our immune system in such a way to promote the correct response to our environment.
