These low angle portions of the structures give a modern appearance, lay in well with the many vertical planes and offer outdoor living space with shelter from the daily heavy rains and the peak sun times. Keeping dry and keeping cool is important. Wood is used sporadically around the homes. Even though Costa Rica is jungle, wood is used primarily for accents, furniture, and cabinetry. Large stark plastered walls with wood ceiling and the occasional wood wall create stunning accents that are very pleasing to the eye. Using concrete, blocks, and plaster as the body of the structure uses less wood resource and offers much more resistance to rot and decay in a region that receives over ninety-one inches of rain a year.

Some data: According to Bureau of Labor Statistics Producer Price Index (PPI) last month, overall construction materials have risen 19.4% in the last 12 months. This is a stark contrast to the overall increase of 1.2% between 2015 to 2019. Steel prices have been on full send rising 108.6% in the last year, 89.6% in 2021 alone...10.8% just this July! Gypsum has risen 15.8% in 2021 and 21.7% in the last 12 months. This comprehensive increase has only dipped twice since December of 2019. Explosion you say?

Integrity Builders did a complete house remodel with an addition. Master suite was created with vaulted ceiling and skylights. Guest bath was enlarged and radiant heating added. Kitchen was re-modeled with new cabinets, granite counters, appliances and skylights added; installed new hardwood floors; added a fireplace and surround; replaced all windows; added air-conditioning; painted interior; re-designed deck and re-fenced the backyard. As a result of this remodel, we are enjoying a warm and comfortable home filled with natural light.

Ironically, this was a few days before the Almeda Fire catastrophically swept through our valley. As many of us were, I was glued to social media for updates. A local’s amazing live video of his journey through the fire area on his bike opened my eyes wide. At one point he stopped and got a close-up video of landscaping on fire next to a home that was still intact. He reported that the fire department had just been through and dowsed water on the landscaping, and he himself had stopped to tamp out flames earlier. He zoomed. Sure enough, it was the exact same bark mulch that we had been called out on by Chambers! Talk about feedback! These codes are important. We need all the info and implementation we can to make our communities safe from the ever-increasing threat of fire.

We started our trip with lodging at Olas Verdes, a LEED platinum hotel resort. Olas Verdes generates enough on-site solar to run the entire hotel on sunny days. They were grid tied, fed back in during the day and drew energy when they needed in the evening. They used one third of water compared to other hotel resorts of their size. They had an extensive on-site sanitation system, which recycled captured water for toilets. Metal roofing with massive gutters, to accommodate their heavy rainfall, collected rainwater which was stored and used for all their on-site laundry needs as well. Of course, the easy stuff, like low flow plumbing fixtures and LED lighting were used throughout the property.

Carpentry
Integrity Building built our custom home in 2006. They were courteous, professional and accommodating. They listened to our ideas and also gave helpful suggestions. They did beautiful work with carpentry and hired excellent sub-contractors. I have recommended them several times and will continue to do so.
Masonry
Materials and Methods. Masonry and concrete. As in many cultures around the world, bricks, blocks and concrete walls can be made locally and close to the construction sites and development areas. Nosara was no different. Usually, minimal site clearing was used and the builders chose to take a low impact approach to the site and build around what was there to bring the natural environment close and into the projects. Footings were somewhat traditional using trenching for forming as opposed to completely clearing this site and forming on top of the prepared grade. This method reduces the use of precious wood forms. The footings are a bit rudimentary in their final appearance compared to what we are used to, but in both countries, these are buried anyway.
