Beware! My son joined month to month. When we called to cancel, we were told we had to send a certified letter to some company. It's ridiculous!!!

Read fine print

Not impressed with trainers or facilities. Joined on a month to month and when I decided to go elsewhere found out I had to send a CERTIFIED letter to another company that handles their memberships in order to cancel. Of course they continue to bill you while this letter makes the rounds. Of coursethis requirement is in the "fine print" of the contract you sign. Never have I been required to jump through hoops in order to cancel a month to month membership at any other gym I have joined in the past. Just be aware Coops is like marriage - easy to get into but hard to get out of.

Be Careful

When I prejoined Coops, I was given six personal training sessions. These went well, and I signed a contract with my trainer for six more sessions to be completed in about 8 weeks. The first few went fine; then my trainer started rescheduling the sessions.....once or twice not even showing up. This was the case on the day my final session was scheduled. This was also the day my training was to be finished, per the contract. I was told that she had left, and that another trainer would contact me. After about two months, and no trainer, and no help from anyone at Coops, I filed a report with the Better Business Bureau. When I finally got a response from the BBB, I was told that Coops' owner, Michael Cooper, had said that because I did not finish my training sessions by the day specified in the contract, he would do nothing. In other words, it was MY FAULT, and not the fault of his employee who did not show up for the final session! I was there ready to work......she was not! This whole episode made me realize that if the owner would treat a client in this manner, he didn't need me as a member of his club. I paid my fees in full (23 months!), but never went back.

THEY DID ME WRONG

I joined Coops in May 2007 and received some free training sessions with the plan I chose. I enjoyed the training sessions enough to buy six additional ones. My trainer and I signed a contract on May 18, 2007 stating that we would be finished by July 9, 2007 "at the latest" (her words). I had finished five sessions, two of which she rescheduled to a later date. On July 9, I went for my last session, but my trainer never showed up. The person at the desk said she was "VERY SICK"....that was the only explanation I got. My trainer called later, said she had some "issues" and would get the head trainer get in touch with me to arrange for my last session. By July 30 I had not heard from him. I spoke to someone at Coops and they assured me he would call "on Monday" (August 1). After several more calls to Coops trying to reach him, he called me and left a message to get in touch with him.(What had I been trying to do?) We played phone tag for a couple of weeks. I was getting really frustrated so I sent an email to the owner explaining my problem. I felt sure things would be taken care of..yeah, right! I never heard from him either! I then sent a report to the Better Business Bureau in September. In October I got a reply saying that the owner would do nothing because "she voided the contract by not finishig her training by the date specified." How did I void it? I was there....HIS EMPLOYEE WAS NOT!!! He did give me until the end of October to have the session, which I declined. I paid for six sessions in six weeks, not five sessions in five weeks and one session three months later! What good would that do? I have not been back to Coops(although I am paid up until April 2009), and I don't intend to go back. I should mention that I paid $540.00 for the training sessions, and everyone I tell says that the price is outrageous. A big loss for me, no doubt!
