Demolition
In 1996, Abhe & Svoboda, Inc. completed an oil spill prevention project at the Pearl Harbor tank farm. The general work description for this project included: construction of new secondary containment berms, re-grading and repair of existing berms, lining of berms with flexible membrane liners (FML), cast in place concrete pavements, catch basins, drain lines, oil/water separators, electrical conduit, lighting, removal of abandoned pipelines, removal and disposal of petroleum and PCB contaminated soil and hazardous waste incidental to any project grading, trenching and demolition, and overflow piping.
The practical implications were that GHD had to return to square one on rehabbing that section. It was no longer feasible to use a manhole as a collection point for the bypass. Instead, excavation would be required along with a wet well. “It all became very complicated and expensive,” Raines says. “It was not worth the money for such a short segment.” Stop logs were employed exclusively to regulate flow and allow rehab work in that segment of pipe.
This project also involved extensive steel repair and replacement including steel seat plate renovation, replacing metal form decking, and replacing siding and roof decking. Additional work included renovation of the press box area, and minor electrical and mechanical work.
Residential Roof Repair
Gail Svoboda founded the company in 1969 as a small painting and roofing contractor. However, as time went on, the company’s focus broadened and it began to take on more complex projects. Today, Abhe & Svoboda is recognized as a leader in the industrial coatings industry, with a portfolio that includes many large-scale civil infrastructure projects, including Pearl Harbor, Indianapolis Motor Speedway and San Diego International Airport.
Residential Roof Replacement/Installation
The facilities at the Lassiter Fuel Farm includes several 80 year-old underground concrete storage tanks, which had not been utilized since 1999. In 2005, Abhe & Svoboda, Inc. refurbished these tanks to make them serviceable again. The work involved cleaning and hazardous waste removal, structural steel repairs and upgrades, painting, roofing, and electrical work.
In 2002, Oregon Department of Transportation awarded Mowat Construction Co. a $23 million contract for rehabilitation work on the Broadway Bridge. The work included bascule deck replacement, roadway resurfacing, electrical work, steel repair and painting.
