Cervical Cancer
The remaining causes of cancer are classified into three broad categories: hereditary, environmental, and replicative (or stem cell divisions). “Hereditary” refers to genetic mutations and cancer risk that are genetically passed on from parents to their children. In essence, a cancer causing mutation gets passed on. Examples of this would include BRCA gene in breast cancer and FAP in colon cancer. “Environmental” is a broad category which includes exposure to known carcinogens; examples of this would include exposure to sun in melanoma patients, smoking in lung cancer patients, and HPV in head and neck cancer and cervical cancer. These risks increase directly the chance of mutation or increase cell turnover or both.

Surgery is the most important treatment option for patients with lung cancer because it provides the best hope for cure of this terrible disease. For patients and their families who are facing important decisions about lung cancer, the most important question is always: "Can I have surgery?" Do not leave this decision to an inexperienced surgeon, or assume that large institutions will assign the most experienced surgeons for every patient. Dr. Sommers has been operating to remove lung cancers for over twenty years. He has personally removed over one thousand lung cancers.

Radiology
Dr. Sommers is a recognized leader in the use of minimally invasive surgical techniques, and one of the first surgeons in Florida to utilize the daVinci surgical robot for thoracic surgery. Dr. Sommers surgeons coordinate each patient’s medical needs with a team of experts from many different fields including specialists from, medical oncology, pulmonary medicine, radiation oncology, and radiology. Dr. Sommers offers innovative or minimally invasive surgical treatments ( video-assisted thoracic surgery VATS, Robot-assisted thoracic surgery, and laser bronchoscopy ) as well as traditional surgical procedures.
Chemotherapy
The mediastinum is the anatomic area between the lungs where the heart, great vessels, thymus, esophagus, and other structures are located. This odd term describes an area where a plethora of different types of tumors and masses may be located, from lymphomas, to thymomas, to nerve tumors and cysts. It takes an experienced surgeon to know what the right approach to these tumors may be. It is very important to know that not all of these tumors should be removed; many are better treated with chemotherapy or radiation. Make sure that the surgeon you have been advised to consult with is experienced in the diagnosis, and treatment of these rare tumors so that you get the best possible outcome. Radiation Therapy
The trachea is the airway from the voicebox to the division into the lungs. Only a few surgeons in Florida routinely perform resections and operations on this anatomic structure. Dr. Sommers has performed dozens of tracheal operations for tumors and narrowing caused by scarring. It takes experience to decide if an operation is the right choice or another treatment would be a better option. Because many surgeons do not have this experience, patients may be advised to undergo less effective treatments such as stenting, or radiation therapy when in fact they can have surgery. Dr. Sommers obtained his undergraduate degree at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire and his medical degree at Northwestern University in Chicago Illinois. He spent ten years at the University of Pittsburgh for his residency training that included general surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, and research in the treatment of patients with cardiothoracic illnesses. He has won numerous awards, including an NIH National Research Service Award, and the prestigious Sheridan-Alley Fellowship to study health policy at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. He has over 50 publications, presentations, and abstracts in his name.
Minimally Invasive Surgery
Dr. K Eric Sommers is committed to providing patients with the best therapies available. The development of minimally invasive surgery in recent years has done more to impact the field of thoracic surgery than any other recent innovation. With traditional (open) approaches, surgery of the thorax is conducted through large open incisions that prolong the patient's hospital stay and postoperative convalescence.
