Criminal Contempt of Court - Criminal contempt of court stems from the authority of the court to punish those who either violate the standards of decorum demanded by the court or who willfully violate the court's orders. Criminal contempt differs from civil contempt in that in criminal contempt the defendant is sentenced to a definite set of time that they cannot automatically purge by subsequent remedial conduct. Traffic Violations
If you are caught driving with a suspended license you will be charged under South Carolina driving under suspension (DUS) law. If convicted, you may face a high fine, mandatory jail time, and a guaranteed extension of your original suspension. Having your license suspended can cause you to have to entirely readjust your lifestyle. It can affect employment, enjoyment and education. Without a license, you will have to rely on other individuals and public transportation to get you to the places you must go.
Sex Crimes
In the public's eye, there is almost no charge worse than a sexual assault or the sexual abuse of a child. Often times, you will be considered guilty until proven innocent for all practical purposes. A conviction will likely result in a lifelong entry in the South Carolina Sex Offense Registry, which is frequently searched by employers, schools, churches and even neighborhood associations. A sex crime conviction could also subject you to further indefinite confinement under the South Carolina Sexually Violent Predator Act.

Burglary first degree, or housebreaking, is a felony punishable by a minimum sentence of 15 years to life imprisonment. It is prosecuted in the court of general sessions by the solicitor's office. A defendant charged with this crime will have their bond set by general sessions, and not by the bond court located at the detention center or county jail. Burglary first degree is considered more serious because it either involves a defendant with a prior record of burglaries, use or possession of a weapon, or a nighttime entry. This is one of the most serious offenses under South Carolina law.
White Collar Crimes
Many times, white collar crimes are investigated by federal law enforcement agencies such as the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), or Postal Inspectors, either alone or in conjunction with local authorities and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED). Frequently, by the time you learn you are under investigation for a white collar crime, law enforcement has already spent months obtaining evidence, employing forensic accountants, and preparing their case against you. Misdemeanors
The charge of providing false information to law enforcement is a serious public corruption crime in South Carolina. The offense is detailed in South Carolina Code of Laws §16-17-725 (2011), which makes it a misdemeanor criminal offense with a maximum penalty of up to 30 days in jail.

Being arrested for any drug related crime in South Carolina is serious business. Many charges carry a possibility of long prison sentences and high fines. All convictions carry the potential for a jail sentence and a mandatory criminal record. Assault
Mayhem is a felony punishable by three months to ten years' imprisonment. It is prosecuted in the court of general sessions by the solicitor's office. It is different from an ordinary assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature in that the victim must be mutilated with a resulting disabling injury. For example, if a victim received a broken leg and would permanently walk with a limp, this may be sufficient to constitute the offense of mayhem.
Murder
Violent crimes or assault charges are those where an individual is accused of harming, or attempting to harm, another human being. Violent crimes range from assault third degree or simple assault, which is prosecuted in the magistrate court and carries a possible sentence of up to 30 days' imprisonment, to murder, which is prosecuted in the court of general sessions and carries a possible sentence of 30 years to life imprisonment or the death penalty.
Probation Violation
Defendants charged with violating the terms or conditions of probation do not have the same rights that they did during their original case. This is because they have already either plead guilty or been convicted to an underlying offense. For example in a probation violation you do not have a right to a trial by jury. This however does not mean that someone accused of a violation has no rights, and there are available legal strategies that can help challenge false or unfair accusations.
Identity Theft
Homicide
S.C. Code §56-5-2910 Reckless homicide is an offense wherein reckless driving resulted in the death of another. It is a felony that carries a penalty of up to ten years in prison. It is prosecuted in the court of general sessions by the solicitor's office.
Shoplifting
Lexington Police make many shoplifting arrests per week. The standard penalty for a shoplifting conviction is a fine of up to $2,130 or up to thirty days in jail. The biggest problem with a shoplifting charge though is the criminal record. Shoplifting is considered a crime of moral turpitude, and can absolutely ruin a criminal background check or employment screening.
Forgery
Forgery is either a misdemeanor or felony depending on the dollar amounts involved. Felony forgery involves goods valued at more than $1,000 and is prosecuted in the court of general sessions by the solicitor's office. Misdemeanor receiving stolen goods is punishable by up to 30 days' imprisonment, and felony receiving stolen goods is punishable by up to ten years' imprisonment.

St degree cases law enforcement may also charge a defendant with kidnapping. This is done in situations where law enforcement is trying to ensure that the prosecutor’s office has the ability to most vigorously pursue charges.
Manslaughter
Involuntary manslaughter is a felony punishable by up to five years' imprisonment. It is prosecuted in the court of general sessions by the solicitor's office. It is the unintentional killing of another with criminal negligence. Criminal negligence is defined as the reckless disregard for the safety of others.
Prostitution
Promoting prostitution of a minor is a felony punishable by 3 to 20 years' imprisonment. It is prosecuted in the court of general sessions by the solicitor's office. This offense relates to the encouraging, managing, or allowing any minor to prostitute themselves.
Extortion
