Tuscaloosa County Public Defendr

Child Support
The Tuscaloosa County District Attorney’s Child Support Unit acts as the legal counsel for the Tuscaloosa County Department of Human Resources (DHR). The Unit works in conjunction with DHR to establish & enforce child support orders and to prosecute deadbeat parents for failure to pay child support. The unit is made up of a director, two Deputy District Attorneys, and support staff.
Child Custody and Visitation
An application for services must be made through DHR. The case is then referred to the District Attorney’s Office by DHR. The contract between DHR and the District Attorney’s Office bars the Child Support Unit from involvement and representation of custody and visitation matters.

Circuit Courts in Alabama are the trial courts of “general jurisdiction” meaning that these courts have the power to decide all cases that can be brought into court under the Constitution and laws of the State of Alabama. The Circuit Courts have exclusive original jurisdiction over felony criminal cases and capital murder cases. Circuit Courts also maintain the authority to hear cases appealed from any court of limited jurisdiction (i.e. Municipal Courts, Probate Courts, and District Courts).
