Overall

We are neighbors of Del Mar Elem. School. We can hear and see everthing happening at the school. It is nice to hear the principal greeting children over the loud speaker with music and positive comments every morning about 8:20. Supervising adults / Teachers speak to children kindly, and are happy and focused. Other than a few foul-mouthed kids, children are also happy and focused. There are special events throughout the school year which seem successful and well attended. BUT... this campus, and the associated Shoreline Middle School campus, is ALWAYS covered in litter. Having seen most of the schools in Santa Cruz County, these two campuses are by far the most littered. Most schools will not tolerate such disrespectful behavior. Children are not taught to place breakfast and lunch litter in the garbage / recycle containers. Litter is strewn all over the track lawn and surrounding areas. Children and staff need to be held accountable for garbage and recycle trash being properly disposed of. Garbage on school grounds should translate into "Clean-Up instead of Recess!" Obiviously the children need to be taught to clean up behind themselves because Shoreline Middle School (where the grade school children transfer to Middle School) large ballfield is covered in litter as well. Children haven't been held as stewards of this earth, and do not feel it is their responsibility to clean up after themselves. Of all the lessons taught to this next generation, a healthy respect for our earth should be the first! Please approach your students with this message with the same positive messaging I hear over the loud speaker every morning!
