What causes this problem to arise? The number one reason is improper biomechanics of the feet along with an abnormal gait (walking) pattern, placing too much stress on the heel bone and the soft tissue that attaches to it. The medical term for this inflammatory response is “Plantar Fasciitis.” This condition occurs when the plantar fascia (a tendon attached to the heel bone) is strained over time beyond its normal extension, causing the soft tissue fibers of the fascia to tear or stretch at it’s attachment to the heel bone or along the arch, resulting in pain and inflammation. Eventually, this could lead to development of excess bone underneath the heel commonly known as a “Heel Spur.”
Smoking Cessation
If a bone will be cut during a planned surgical procedure, some steps can be taken pre-and post-operatively to help optimize healing. The surgeon may offer advice on diet and nutritional supplements that are essential to bone growth. Smoking cessation, and adequate control of blood sugar levels in diabetics, are important. Smoking and high glucose levels interfere with bone healing.
Emergency Care
Following an ankle injury it is important to have the ankle evaluated by a foot and ankle surgeon for proper diagnosis and treatment. If you are unable to do so right away, go to the emergency room and then follow up with a foot and ankle surgeon as soon as possible for a more thorough assessment.

This diabetic male had been suffering from chronic achilles pain for years. After examining his achilles with an Ultrasound I discovered that he had several holes in his achilles tendon. After having Platelet injections his achilles the perforations closed and is achilles was fully healed and he has since been pain free.

Achilles Tendonitis
Achilles tendonitis is an inflammation of the Achilles tendon. This inflammation is typically short-lived. Over time, if not resolved, the condition may progress to a degeneration of the tendon (Achilles tendonosis), in which the tendon loses its organized structure and is likely to develop microscopic tears. Sometimes the degeneration involves the site where the Achilles tendon attaches to the heel bone. In rare cases, chronic degeneration with or without pain may result in rupture of the tendon.
Ankle Instability
Ankle sprains may occur while running, fielding balls, stepping on or sliding into bases. Sprains should be evaluated by a foot and ankle surgeon to determine the extent of injury, including possible peroneal tendon injuries or fractures. The foot and ankle surgeon will develop a treatment plan: failure to fully treat and rehabilitate a sprain may lead to chronic ankle instability and recurrent sprains.

Flat Feet
