Primary Care
Many health insurance plans require pre-authorization from referring primary care (or family) physicians before their patients can receive medical services from one of our specialists. The patient is responsible for providing the authorization to us before their first visit.

Glaucoma
A technician will perform the initial portion of the diagnostic testing. He or she will review your medical history and collect additional information that is important for the doctor to know prior to the examination. The technician will check your intraocular pressure, which is a routine test for glaucoma. He or she will also administer eye drops to dilate the pupils of your eye. It is necessary that the pupils be widely dilated in order for the doctor to examine carefully the entire interior portion of the eye. It takes approximately 30 minutes for the eye drops to work, so you will be asked to return to the waiting room until your eyes are ready for examination by your doctor.

In support of UV Safety Month this July, the American Academy of Ophthalmology reminds us of the importance of shielding eyes from the sun’s harmful rays with 100% UV-blocking sunglasses and broad-brimmed hats. The American Academy of Ophthalmology tells us studies have shown that long-term exposure to bright sunlight may increase the risk of cataracts and growths on the eye, including cancer. UV rays reflected off sand and water can cause eyes to sunburn.

Your first appointment will include a comprehensive eye evaluation, including a detailed examination of your vitreous and retina. It may last up to three hours. You will have drops applied to your eyes to dilate the pupils so that your retinas can be examined. We recommend you bring a companion to drive you home, as you may not be able to see clearly after the dilated eye exam.

Diabetic Retinopathy
Southeastern Retina Associates is one of 100 sites across the country partnering with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in a study of the use of the drug Eylea as an injectable eye treatment for diabetic patients with vision problems. The study will evaluate the effectiveness of the new treatment compared to laser therapy, the current gold standard treatment for a complication of diabetic retinopathy in which patients suffer bleeding in the retina. The condition can result in blindness if not treated successfully. Patients taking part in the study will get either injections of Eylea, laser therapy, or simply be observed for changes. Steve Perkins, M.D., of Southeastern Retina Associates is recruiting diabetics whose vision remains relatively undamaged to participate in the study. Injections of Eylea are free, though patients or their insurance may be required to pay other costs involving regular eye care. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a retinal disease that affects the small central area of the retina known as the macula. With AMD your vision may be less sharp, distorted or blurry which can make it hard to do everyday tasks like reading, driving and even recognizing a friend’s face. The exact cause of AMD is unknown but it develops as the eye ages. It is the leading cause of vision loss in older Americans. There are two types of AMD, wet and dry. The most common form is dry AMD which develops and worsens slowly over time. Wet AMD is less common but can progress much faster and cause loss of central vision in one or both eyes. The Retina and Age-Related Macular Degeneration The retina is a thin layer of light-sensitive nerve tissue that lines the back of the eye cavity.
