A denture is a removable replacement for missing teeth and adjacent tissues. It is made of acrylic resin, sometimes in combination with various metals. Complete dentures replace all the teeth, while a partial denture fills in the spaces created by missing teeth and prevents other teeth from changing position. Complete dentures are either “conventional” or “immediate.” A conventional denture is placed in the mouth about a month after all the teeth are removed to allow for proper healing, whereas an immediate denture is placed as soon as the teeth are removed. Teeth Whitening
Whiter teeth are something almost everyone would like. Over time, teeth naturally yellow. This is due in part to aging and in part because of dark-colored foods and drinks that stain the teeth. Tooth whitening is a highly effective procedure that can lighten the teeth by several shades, enhancing a person’s entire facial appearance. There are two methods of professional tooth whitening — an at-home version and an in-office one. The at-home method uses custom-fit, comfortable mouth trays that are filled with a whitening gel and worn for one to several hours at a time. The mouth trays hold a mild solution. The main ingredient of the solution is carbamide peroxide, a substance that reacts with water to release a non-toxic whitening, not bleaching, element (hydrogen peroxide). The mouth trays need to be used over several weeks for accurate results. The in-office procedure can be done in about an hour. This treatment involves coating the teeth with a form of carbamide peroxide gel. A light activates the gel and the tooth enamel takes on a whiter appearance immediately. For continued optimal whitening, it is recommended that the take home mouth tray be used in conjunction with the in-office process.
