The Framingham Study on Arthritis of the Knee was published in Arthritis and Rheum in 1998 by Dr Zhang of Boston University School of Medicine entitled, (4) They examined whether estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) prevents worsening of radiographic knee osteoarthritis (OA) in elderly women. They followed 551 post-menopausal women (over the age of 63) for 8 years with serial knee X-Rays, looking for worsening of osteoarthritis over time. The authors found a 60% decrease in osteo-arthritis in the estrogen users compared to non-users.(4)
Fibromyalgia
Years of Weekend “Clubbing” and “Raves” with the recreational use of Ecstasy has created an entire generation, called Generation E.(12-20). Many of these Post-MDMA, post-Ecstasy members of Generation E are now suffering from low testosterone and other symptoms of hypothalmic dysfunction with chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia. They may find it difficult to find a physician who has the knowledge and experience to help them.

According to Dr Felson in Current Opinions in Rheumatology May 1998, osteoarthritis increases dramatically in women after menopausal age of 50 years. Medical studies following post menopausal women bio identical hormone users report reduced osteoarthritis when compared to women not using. This suggests a role for estrogen supplements for prevention of osteoarthritis in women after age 50. (15)
Nutritional Counseling
Recommended interventions focus on dietary changes (e.g., reduced consumption of saturated fat and dietary cholesterol, and increased consumption of dietary fiber) to improve LDL-C (5,6). Weight management through an improved diet and nutritional counseling also is recommended as a primary treatment of abnormal lipid levels. Finally, studies suggest that physical activity might improve HDL-C and triglyceride levels, and to some extent, LDL-C concentrations (7). Although therapeutic lifestyle counseling is the first course of action in reducing abnormal lipid levels among youths, AAP recommends considering pharmacologic interventions to treat children whose LDL remains persistently high even after therapeutic lifestyle counseling (2).

In 1998, the American Academy of Pediatrics convened a Committee on Nutrition to discuss “Cholesterol in Childhood ” which published guidelines for treating kids with statin drugs for high cholesterol. The guidlines were revised in 2008 by Dr Stephen R. Daniels, causing a national uproar. Apparently, Daniels and co-authors had undisclosed ties to Merck, maker of statin drug Mevacor.

Suzy is a 59 year old post menopausal woman with low thyroid function. About three months ago, she started her bio-identical hormone program which included natural thyroid pills. After starting the program, she was doing well with more energy, better sleep, improved appearance of skin and hair, and resolution of her menopausal symptoms of flashes and sweats. However about 12 weeks into her program, Suzy had a visit with her primary care doctor who did a follow up thyroid panel. Her primary care doctor informed Suzy that her TSH test result was below the lab normal range, and therefore, her thyroid dose was too high, and should be reduced. (Note: TSH is Thyroid Stimulating Hormone, and is made by the pituitary gland).

Crohn’s disease is a severe inflammatory condition of the small bowel which can be difficult to treat. Not difficult for LDN however. Jill Smith, M.D. reported that two-thirds of her 17 Crohn’s patients went into remission, and 90% of the group had some benefit. Her article showed impressive colonoscopy photos before and after LDN treatment with complete clearing of the inflammatory changes in the bowel mucosa. Dr. Smith concluded that “LDN therapy appears effective and safe in subjects with active Crohn’s disease.”( 2 )

Being an astute clinician, Dr. Barnes makes a number of observations about the low thyroid condition. Firstly, low thyroid is associated with a reduced immunity to infectious diseases such as TB (tuberculosis). Before the advent of modern antibiotics in the 1940’s, most low thyroid children succumbed to infectious diseases before reaching adulthood. Secondly, low thyroid is associated with a peculiar form of skin thickening called myxedema which causes a characteristic appearance of the face, puffiness around the eyes, fullness under the chin, loss of outer eyebrows, and hair thinning or hair loss.

A 1996 study on estrogen replacement and osteoarthritis published in the Archives of Internal Medicine from Dr Genant at the University of California, San Francisco examined 4,366 post-menopausal women over the age of 65. Colon Cancer
Nude mice inoculated with human colon cancer (HT-29) and receiving 0.1 mg/kg naltrexone (NTX) beginning immediately after tumor cell injection exhibited a marked retardation in tumorigenicity. This dosage of NTX, which blocked opioid receptors for 6-8 h/day, resulted in a delay of 2.4-fold in tumor appearance compared to control subjects. At the time (10 days) when all control mice had tumors, 80% of the mice in the 0.1 mg/kg NTX group had no signs of neoplasia. Binding capacity, but not affinity, of [3H][Met5]-enkephalin was reduced 85% of control levels in tumor tissue from mice of the 0.1 NTX group. Plasma, but not tumor tissue levels of [Met5]-enkephalin were elevated (2.5-fold) in contrast to control values. These results suggest that daily intermittent opioid receptor blockade with NTX provokes the interaction of opioids and receptors in the interval following drug availability, with opioids serving to inhibit tumorigenicity of human colon cancer.

Does Testosterone Therapy cause Prostate Cancer? The answer is NO and is clearly found in the medical literature. Dr. Rhoden, in the January 2004 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, reviewed 72 medical studies and found no evidence that testosterone therapy causes prostate cancer. (2) In fact, they note that prostate cancer becomes more prevalent exactly at the time of a man’s life when testosterone levels decline.(2)

A 2003 study by Ling Zhang ahowed that molecular Iodine caused lung cancer cells to undergo programmed cell death (apoptosis). These lung cancer cells had been genetically modified to increase iodine uptake.(12) Interestingly, a 1993 case report describes spontaneous remission of lung cancer in a patient incidentally treated with Amiodorone which contains iodine (about 9 mg per day)(13)

This largely ignored and inexpensive off-patent drug called LDN has been used with great success over the past 20 years by various renegade physicians to cure or induce remissions in a host of seemingly unrelated diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis, Crohn’s, Systemic Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Pancreatic Cancer and Lymphoma. Ralph G. Walton, MD, professor and chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at Northeastern Ohio University’s College of Medicine, conducted an analysis of all the medical studies—164 of them at the time—dealing with human safety as it relates to the use of aspartame. The studies were separated into two categories: 74 of the studies were sponsored by the aspartame industry and 90 of them were non-industry-sponsored studies. Dr. Walton found that of the 74 studies sponsored by the aspartame industry, 100 percent of them claimed there were no health problems associated with aspartame use. Of the 90 studies that had no connections to industry, all but seven of them identified one or more problems with aspartame use. Interestingly, of the seven studies that did not find problems, the FDA had conducted six. Critics suggest that since a number of FDA officials eventually went to work for the aspartame industry, these six studies should be considered industry-sponsored research as well.

One case report involves a lymphoma patient who experienced dramatic regression with LDN. This report by Berkson describes the treatment of a 61-year old man with biopsy-proven Lymphoma. His initial physical examination and PET/CT scan showed multiple large, metabolically active, pathologic lymph nodes that demonstrated complete resolution within 6 months of commencing therapy with Low Dose Naltrexone, taken as a capsule before sleep every night. From Japan, Dr Funahashi reported a common seaweed food containing high iodine content is more beneficial than chemotherapy on breast cancer. “He found that administration of Lugol’s iodine or iodine-rich Wakame seaweed to rats treated with the carcinogen dimethyl benzanthracene suppressed the development of mammary tumors. The same group demonstrated that seaweed induced apoptosis in human breast cancer cells with greater potency than that of fluorouracil, a chemotherapeutic agent used to treat breast cancer.”(8)

RESULTS:Forty-eight consecutive patients underwent laparoscopic hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy and 42 with ovarian ablation only. The mean operative time for the laparoscopic hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy or BSO alone was 82 min and 47.8 min, respectively. Blood loss was minimal in both groups (range: 20-250 ml). The rate of postoperative complications was very low (4.4%). One of all ovaries removed by laparoscopy showed ovarian breast carcinoma metastasis. Histopathologic examination revealed concomitant findings of leiomyoma, adenomyosis or endometrial abnormalities in 64.5% of hysterectomy specimens.
