Hoarseness is another warning sign of possible throat cancer. Fortunately, most cancers of the voice box will cause hoarseness while the tumor is still small. In these cases, radiation may be used with good cure rates. If the tumor has grown larger, a combination of chemotherapy and radiation can cure the cancer. The voice box is removed only in rare cases. Other symptoms include unexpected weight loss, a feeling of “fullness” in the throat, nasal obstructions, visible physical changes, facial numbness and spitting up blood. (See Photo)
Ear Infections
Allergies can start at any age. Infants and small children may be allergic to milk products or eggs, and the allergies may go away as they get older. Sometimes allergies seem to go away then come back. Older adults can suddenly become allergic to something they’ve been exposed to all of their life with no problems. Sinus allergies can block the drainage pathways of the sinuses. This can lead to chronic sinus infections or ear infections. These chronic infections can lead to thickening in the sinus passages. Allergies can cause sinuses to swell and form polyps. Polyps can block nasal passages, leading to further infection. Sometimes surgery is required to correct the sinus damage caused by allergies, and to help eliminate further infection.
Emergency Care
• Watch for bleeding. A little bleeding on the day of surgery is normal. If bleeding persists and blood is bright red, contact office immediately or go to the emergency room.

Other tests may be done! Electrocochleography (EcoG) may indicate increase inner ear fluid pressure in some cases of Meniere’s disease. The auditory brainstem response (ABR), a computerized test of the hearing nerves and brain pathways, computed tomography (CT) or, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may be needed to rule out a tumor occurring on the hearing and balance nerve. Such tumors are rare, but they can cause symptoms similar to Meniere’s disease.
Computed Tomography
A septoplasty is the medical term used for fixing a deviated septum. The septum is the cartilage and bone that divides the nose into two chambers. Sinus problems such as recurrent infections, feeling of constant congestion, and/or inability to breathe through the blocked nostril are signs of a deviated septum. An CT scan may be obtained and may also reveal enlarged turbinates, which can block the nasal airway. The turbinates are the cigar shaped structures located just beyond the nostrils on both sides of the nose. PRITS stands for Partial Resection of Inferior Turbinates.
Chemotherapy
Radiation Therapy
In cases requiring both surgery and radiation, the radiation phase occurs two to five weeks after surgery. Radiation is often essential to kill microscopic deposits of tumor cells lingering in the tissues surrounding the original tumor. The patient typically will receive radiation treatments five days a week for about six weeks. Each treatment is brief, and various techniques are used to minimize side effects, which include a sore throat and red skin. These side effects go away after radiation therapy is finished. All in all, most people tolerate this phase fairly well.

Ear Surgery
The physician will take a history of the frequency, duration, severity, and character of your attacks, the duration of hearing loss or whether it has been changing, and whether you have had tinnitus or fullness in either or both ears. You may be asked whether there is a history of syphilis, mumps, or other serious infections in the past, inflammations of the eye, an autoimmune disorder or allergy, or ear surgery in the past. You may be asked questions about your general health, such as whether you have diabetes, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, thyroid, neurologic or emotional disorders. Tests may be ordered to look for these problems in certain cases. The physical examination of the ears, and other structures of the head and neck is usually normal, except during an attack.
Otolaryngology

Eczema
Affecting the outer ear, swimmer’s ear (also called acute otitis externa) is a painful condition resulting from inflammation, irritation, or infection. These symptoms often occur after water gets trapped in your ear, with subsequent spread of bacteria or fungal organisms. Because this condition commonly affects swimmers, it is known as swimmer’s ear. Swimmer’s ear often affects children and teenagers, but can also affect those with eczema (a condition that causes the skin to itch), or excess earwax. Your doctor will prescribe treatment to reduce your pain and to treat the infection.

To evaluate you for swimmer’s ear, your doctor will look for redness and swelling in your ear canal. Your doctor also may take a sample of any abnormal fluid or discharge in your ear to test for the presence of bacteria or fungus (ear culture) if you have recurrent or severe infections.
Lesions
The temporalmandibular joint (TMJ) is located between the lower jaw and the temporal bone of your skull. Infections, trauma, and lesions can cause TMJ disorders. TMJ disorders are more common in women than men. Disorders are usually caused by grinding your teeth or clenching your jaw.

Allergies
Initial testing to determine what you are allergic to usually takes about an hour. Testing is sometimes done from a blood sample, but skin testing is the preferred method in most cases. After discussing your symptoms and history, and examining your ears, nose, and throat, the physician will recommend allergy testing if he concludes that allergies may be causing some of your symptoms.
