Teeth Cleaning
Implants are constructed from durable materials that are resistant to damage from cavity-causing bacteria. Although implants are very strong, patients should still visit their dentist or oral surgeon regularly for checkups. Receiving professional dental cleanings are important, too, as the gums surrounding an implant can develop periodontal disease. Because dental implants are permanently secured in the jaw, patients will brush and floss them just like they do with biological teeth.

Crowns
Dental implants function similarly to biological teeth because they address tooth loss below and above the surface of the gums. Unlike traditional replacement teeth that rest on top of the gum line, dental implants are surgically embedded into the jawbone for security and longevity. Implants may be used to replace a single tooth or support a set of prosthetic teeth. For single tooth replacement, an implant has two parts. The first part is a titanium post that is inserted into the jawbone where bone will integrate around the implant over time. This process allows the post to function like a toothâ€™s root. The second part of an implant consists of a custom made dental crown, which is attached to the post by an abutment. The crown will appropriately fill in the empty tooth socket, support neighboring teeth, and provide a stable biting surface for eating.
Restorative Dentistry

Dentures
A small amount of bleeding is to be expected following the operation. If bleeding occurs, place a gauze pad directly over the bleeding socket and apply biting pressure for 30 minutes. If bleeding continues, a moist tea bag can be used for 30 minutes. If bleeding occurs, avoid hot liquids, exercise, and elevate the head. If bleeding persists, call our office immediately. Do not remove immediate denture unless the bleeding is severe. Expect some oozing around the side of the denture.

Dental Implants
Good candidates for dental implants need to have healthy gums and be free of periodontal disease. Patients should also have enough bone mass to support the implant. However, some patients who may not be immediately eligible for implants benefit from grafting procedures and periodontal therapy. For example, patients with inadequate bone mass can receive a bone graft to help build up the bone enough to support an implant. The only way to be sure if you are a candidate for dental implants is to schedule a consultation with one of our experienced oral surgeons at our practice. During your consultation, our team will conduct a thorough examination to determine the appropriate course of treatment that is just right for you.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral Surgery
Extracting wisdom teeth is a minor oral surgery and with anesthetic and sedative medication, patients enjoy a comfortable experience. If your dentist has recommended that you visit an oral surgeon for wisdom teeth removal, we welcome you to call our practice to reserve an appointment with one of our caring surgeons.
Jaw Surgery
The upper and lower jaws play an important role in the oral health system. Connected to the temporomandibular joint, the upper and lower jaws fit together to form a patientâ€™s occlusion (bite) when the mouth is closed or at a resting position. Jawbones also anchor teeth by their roots. If the jawbones have congenital and developmental abnormalities or have been affected by illness or atrophy, jaw surgery, also known as orthognathic surgery, may be required for patients to enjoy smooth and efficient oral function.

Tooth Extractions
After tooth extraction, itâ€™s important for a blood clot to form to stop the bleeding and begin the healing process. Thatâ€™s why we ask you to bite on a gauze pad for 30-45 minutes after the appointment. If the bleeding or oozing still persists, insert another gauze pad and bite firmly for another 30 minutes. You may have to do this several times.
Bone Grafting
Bone grafting procedures typically precede the placement of dental implants. The technology and methods used in this type of oral surgery procedure allow more patients to be candidates for dental implants than ever before. Bone grafting helps regenerate and strengthen areas of facial bones such as the jaws where the bone has atrophied. There are different types of grafts but the basic principle is the same: Bone grafting involves attaching bone from a different area of the body or cultured bone to areas where bone density is low.

Orthodontics
Jaw surgery is corrective in nature. Sometimes the jawbones require surgical repositioning to correct a malocclusion such as an open bite or an under bite. When orthodontics and restorative dentistry cannot improve the placement of the upper and lower sets of teeth, orthognathic surgery is typically necessary. Beyond improving oral function, jaw surgery can align the jawbones to healthier positions and ultimately prevent wear and tear on teeth and/or the development of TMJ disorder. The jawbones also heavily influence a patientâ€™s appearance because the contour of the jaws shapes the mouth. Because of this, orthognathic surgery can promote facial symmetry as well.

General Dentistry
Dr. James T. Shaner joined OMS in 2021 after leaving active military service. He was born and raised in Farmington, MO, where he graduated as valedictorian of Farmington High School, and completed his undergraduate education at the University of Missouri earning degrees in both Biology and History, summa cum laude. He completed his dental education at the University of Missouri â€“ Kansas City where he was a US Army Health Professions Scholarship Program recipient. Following graduation, he entered active military service as a US Army Captain and did a short tour as a general dentist at Ft. Stewart, GA, just outside of Savannah. He then completed his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in suburban Washington, DC, which included extensive exposure to maxillofacial trauma, orthognathic surgery, and complex implant reconstruction. He was promoted to Major during residency. After graduation, he was transferred to Ft. Bliss, TX where he served as an attending surgeon and eventually assistant program director for the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency program at William Beaumont Army Medical Center. He was also the OMS mentor for the Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency program at Ft. Bliss.. Following the end of his military commitment, totalling 11 years on Active Duty, he and his family were excited to return home to Missouri and join OMS Group. His primary clinical interests include orthognathic surgery, facial trauma surgery, dentoalveolar surgery, and dental implant surgery. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, a Fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and a member of the Academy of Osseointegration, the American Dental Association, the Missouri Dental Association, and the Greater Springfield Dental Society.
