Vaccination
Although protecting our pets against some diseases has been made possible with the use of today's vaccines, no vaccine is 100% effective. There are always things that can interfere with how well the body uses vaccines to protect itself. The quality of the vaccine. How it is stored. How it is given. The proper timing of vaccinations. The health of the pet at the time a vaccine is given. The ability of the immune system to make use of the vaccine. All of these factors make it important that a physical be given, a history taken and a professional give the vaccination and advise of the proper timing necessary to provide the optimal protection. That is why at Ojai Pet Hospital a visit with Dr. Shouse and a thorough physical and history are strongly recommended.
Veterinary Ophthalmology
Even though corticosteroids can have seemingly miraculous results in treating the intense itching caused by your pet’s allergies, the potential harm they can cause is significant. Although, as with any drug, individuals vary as to how dramatic their side effects will be (if any), those that do develop problems with steroids can have such problems as increased appetite, panting, diarrhea, behavioral changes, weight gain, fat redistribution, a pendulous abdomen, dull dry coat, thin skin, poor hair regrowth after clipping, blackheads, increased skin fragility and bruisability, poor wound healing, muscle weakness and wasting. They can precipitate or worsen infectious diseases, predispose to pancreatitis, colitis and gastritis, cause liver problems, diabetes (by causing insulin resistance), adrenal or pituitary atrophy, infertility, bone and muscle problems, cataracts, growth suppression, and can increase the risk of cancer and hypertension.
Behavioral Counseling
Senility is a condition seen in a great many older pets. Some of the symptoms are loss of learned behavior (inappropriate urination, bowel movements in the house, etc.), barking for no apparent reason, confusion, behavior changes (aggressiveness), etc. Many of these pets can be helped with medications. A very simple approach is to use a product called Cholodin. This is a dietary supplement comprised of specific vitamins and minerals that, in the amounts and combinations used, helps many pets to overcome their senility symptoms.
Nutritional Counseling
Obesity is a common problem in our older pets. Older pets often tend to exercise less (especially if they have arthritis) and eat more. Inactivity can lead to even greater weight gain, becoming a vicious cycle. A pet only slightly overweight can be fed less food to reverse the problem, or can be given Prescription Diet w/d. A truly obese pet will need a specific reducing product such as Prescription Diet r/d (reducing diet). The severely overweight pet needs significant calorie restriction. This cannot be accomplished with regular diets without restricting to dangerous levels the vitamins,minerals, carbohydrates, etc. that are needed in certain minimum amounts. Prescription Diet r/d is fortified with extra nutrients while restricting the caloric content. It also has more fiber to provide a ‘fuller feeling’ after eating to help the pet feel more loved. (Doesn’t everyone associate getting more food with being better loved?)
Comprehensive Examination
It is important for your family pets to have at least yearly physicals as provided in our Lifecare Program and at Ojai Pet Hospital a physical examination is included with most vaccines. In spite of the importance of the physical, some owners elect to forego the physical examination to minimize costs and take advantage of low cost vaccine alternatives.

Our area, although a nice area to live in, has an especially difficult problem with fleas due to our mild winters. While in Southern California, flea season never really ends, Spring is the time when fleas really start to return in full strength to “bug” our pets. It is important to either continue flea control year round, or to at least restart flea control products by March or April if you stopped using them during the winter time. Do not let the fleas get out of hand before your start using the flea products or you can really feel like you are fighting a losing battle in the flea wars.

Canine distemper is a widespread, usually fatal disease that causes severe pneumonia. If the pet survives the pneumonia, it usually develops serious neurological problems that can be life threatening. Canine leptospirosis is a bacterial infection which may lead to permanent kidney damage. The disease is easily spread to other pets or to humans.
Parvovirus Infection Treatment
Canine parvovirus infection is a disease of widespread distribution which may cause severe dehydrating diarrhea in dogs of varying ages. Parvovirus infection is especially dangerous for puppies. Although with intensive veterinary care, most dogs can survive parvovirus, intensive veterinary care is very expensive, and who will survive and who will not cannot be predicted. Prevention is obviously the best course. Dogs must be vaccinated up to about 5 months of age to properly protect against this disease.
Feline Retro Virus Treatment
Feline leukemia is a viral disease which can take several forms. Some cats have transient infections with few ill effects. Others have persistent infections varying in severity, some of which may be fatal over time. Cats are most commonly exposed to feline leukemia virus through contact with another, infected cat; thus, likelihood of infection is greater in multi-cat households or where cats are allowed to roam free. Extensive scientific research has shown no relationship between feline leukemia and human leukemia.
Bacterial and Viral Infection Treatment
Feline pneumonitis, a third common respiratory ailment in cats, is caused by the organism Chlamydia psittaci. Signs of pneumonitis are similar to those of FVR and FCV (sneezing, fever, loss of appetite, nasal discharge, inflamed eyes). Also like other respiratory diseases, pneumonitis can be complicated by bacterial infections which result in pneumonia or meningitis. Even after a cat recovers from pneumonitis, it may harbor Chlamydia organisms and become ill again if stressed.

Osteoarthritis is a disease that primarily affects joints. It is an inflammatory disease that causes damage to joints, leading to cartilage and bone changes that result in pain. Although arthritis cannot be cured, many things can be done to minimize the pain and even slow down the progression of the disease.

Actually, osteoarthritis has always been a problem with our pets, it was just not commonly recognized in the early stages. Our pets tended to suffer in silence, allowing changes to occur in the joints more rapidly. Most pet owners thought that “Fluffy’s” slowness in getting up or favoring a leg was just part of the aging process. Just ‘getting old’ no longer means nothing can be done to help. That is usually the farthest from the truth in any situation involving our pets. If something seems wrong, it probably is wrong. Once diagnosed, joint pain often can be helped, if not actually cured. Many pets suffer much more than they should because the average pet owner simply doesn’t recognize the early symptoms.

Laboratory Services
The test is a blood test that looks for antibodies to the presence of the heartworm. Once your pet is exposed to heartworm, it can take several months for the test to show positive, even though worms are present. If your pet has potentially been exposed to heartworm by having been in a high risk heartworm area, it may be necessary to wait awhile to test them or may require repeating a test several months later to be on the safe side.Testing for microfilaria as well can help pick up some of these infections. It is important to test your pet prior to starting heartworm medications because if your pet already has the parasite, the preventative medication will not kill the existing worms and they will continue to cause heart and lung damage until properly treated.
