Sinusitis
Pediatric sinusitis is different than adult sinusitis. Even though children’s sinuses are not fully developed until late in the teen years, the maxillary (behind the cheek) and ethmoid (between the eyes) sinus are present at birth. In the first several years of life, young children are more prone to infections of the nose, sinus, and ears. These are most frequently caused by viral infections (colds) and they may be aggravated by allergies. Otitis media means “inflammation of the middle ear” as a result of a middle ear infection. It can occur in one or both ears. Otitis media is the most frequent diagnosis for children who visit physicians for illness. It is also the most common cause of hearing loss in children. Although otitis media is most common in young children, it occasionally affects adults.

Your child’s primary care physician may be either a pediatrician or a family practice doctor. If your child is not diagnosed with a hearing loss in the newborn period but develops hearing loss later in life, it is the responsibility of this doctor to make appropriate referrals to an ear, nose and throat specialist and an audiologist to rule out or diagnose hearing loss. Your child’s primary care doctor may also participate in the treatment of ear infections or refer them to an otolaryngologist for treatment. The primary care physician or the otolaryngologist may also provide a referral to a doctor who specializes in medical genetics to find out if your child’s hearing loss may be hereditary. That may help you determine if a similar hearing loss could occur in your other children.

Beta-blocker medications cannot be taken 5-7 days prior to skin test for safety reasons. Beta-blockers are often used to treat high blood pressure, glaucoma, or migraines. Please consult the physician who prescribed the medication prior to testing to see if discontinuance is permitted. Do not stop taking the beta-blocker without your prescribing physician’s approval.

Kidney Stones
. In this case, a benign tumor on the parathyroid causes the parathyroid to make too much PTH, which can result in too much calcium in the blood (hypercalcemia). Having too much calcium in the blood can cause osteoporosis and kidney stones.
Endoscopy
Ideally, you should have yearly exams where your doctor examines your neck for any lumps and examines the inside of your mouth, nose, and throat for any signs of cancer, especially if you smoke and drink in excess. Any mass that is worrisome should be evaluated by a physician who is familiar with head and neck cancer. Typically, imaging studies, lab tests (e.g., blood test, pee test), and a biopsy will need to be done prior to determining the appropriate course of treatment. Your doctor may also order a few other tests including an HPV test, or an endoscopy (a scope used to look at the inside of your head and neck with a tube that goes in through your nose and down your throat).
Lung Cancer
The good news is that this figure has decreased due to the increasing number of Americans who have quit smoking. The bad news is that some of these smokers switched to smokeless or spit tobacco, assuming it is a safe alternative. This is untrue. By doing so, they are only changing the site of the cancer risk from their lungs to their mouths. While lung cancer cases are decreasing, cancers in the head and neck appear to be increasing, but they are curable if caught early. Fortunately, most head and neck cancers produce early symptoms. You should know the potential warning signs so you can alert your doctor as soon as possible.

Neurology
Migraines are thought to be caused by vasoconstriction of cranial vessels or neuronal dysfunction. Changes in nerve cell activity and blood flow may result in symptoms such as visual disturbances, vertigo (spinning), motion intolerance, positional vertigo, photophobia (light sensitivity), misophonia (sound sensitivity), and nausea. Migraine associated dizziness may be due to the constriction of blood supply to the cochlear and/or vestibular system. Evaluation for migraine-associated dizziness includes a hearing evaluation, a complete case history, videonystagmography (VNG), and a neurology consultation. Migraine medications have been shown to reduce migraine-associated dizziness successfully.
Multiple Sclerosis
A number of diseases of the nerves can affect balance, such as multiple sclerosis, syphilis, tumors, etc. These are uncommon causes, but our doctors may perform certain tests to evaluate these.

It is always difficult for parents to receive bad news about any aspect of their child’s health. Reacting with anger, grief, and even guilt is not unusual when finding out that your child is hearing-impaired. These feelings are best managed by discussing them with a family member, close friend, clergy, or mental health professional. At times, the feeling may also result in a degree of denial. Feel free to seek a second opinion, but it is unadvisable to delay further recommended diagnostic evaluations for your child. The best treatment for hearing loss of any degree is an appropriate early intervention. Significant delays may result in irreversible harm to your child’s hearing, speech, language, and eventual educational development.

Thyroid Cancer
Thyroid cancer is pretty rare and patients usually have no symptoms. It is sometimes noticed first as a lump in the neck. Your doctor will remove and examine a tiny piece of the lump to determine if it is cancer or a harmless nodule.

Ultrasound
During your appointment, your ear, nose, and throat (ENT) doctor will ask you questions about your medical history, conduct a physical exam, and order thyroid-specific tests such as blood tests (to check thyroid function), imaging tests such as an ultrasound, CT or MRI scan, and/or fine-needle aspiration to diagnose and find the cause of your thyroid problem.
MRI
Besides conducting a hearing test, your doctor may order other tests, such as a balance test, blood test, or MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) to determine the underlying cause for your sudden sensorineural hearing loss.
X-Rays
Computed Tomography
During your child’s appointment, the ENT doctor will examine your child’s ears, nose, and throat. A thorough history and examination usually lead to the correct diagnosis. Occasionally, special instruments will be used to look into the nose during the office visit. An x-ray called a CT scan may help to determine how completely your child’s sinuses are developed, where any blockage has occurred, and confirm the diagnosis of sinusitis. The doctor may look for factors that make your child more likely to get sinus infections, including structural changes, allergies, and problems with the immune system.
Chemotherapy
Most patients with autoimmune inner ear disease respond to the initial treatment of steroids, prednisone, and methotrexate, a chemotherapy agent. Some patients may benefit from the use of hearing aids. If patients are unresponsive to drug therapy and hearing loss persists, a cochlear implant may be considered.
Radiation Therapy
Acoustic neuromas are rare. Only about 2,000 cases are diagnosed in the United States each year. An acoustic neuroma is a benign tumor on the vestibular portion of the eighth cranial nerve, which connects the inner ear to the brain. An acoustic neuroma may cause vertigo (spinning), unsteadiness, imbalance, or lightheadedness in addition to hearing loss and/or ringing in the affected ear. Most acoustic neuromas are removed by surgery. Other options, including various types of radiation therapy (often called radiosurgery), are available. Each type of treatment entails some risk of a permanent change in hearing, balance, and facial motion. Some people may experience imbalance for several months after surgery.

Ear Surgery
If it is determined that your child’s hearing loss is permanent, hearing aids may be recommended to amplify the sound reaching your child’s ear. In some instances, ear surgery may be able to restore or significantly improve hearing. For those with certain types of very severe hearing loss who do not benefit sufficiently from hearing aids, a cochlear implant may be considered. Unlike a hearing aid, the implant bypasses damaged parts of the auditory system and directly stimulates the hearing nerve, allowing the child to hear a louder and clearer sound.

Otolaryngology (pronounced oh/toe/lair/in/goll/oh/jee) is the oldest medical specialty in the United States. Doctors that carry this title are trained in the medical and surgical management of patients with diseases and disorders of the ear, nose, throat, and other related structures of the head and neck.

Botox
. Botox is injected into your neck to decrease muscle spasms or abnormal movements that affect the vocal muscles of the larynx.
Rhinoplasty
Septoplasty can be frequently combined with turbinate reductions, and/or balloon sinuplasty and functional endoscopic sinus surgery. These procedures should not leave any bruising or facial swelling. Septoplasty can also be performed in conjunction with a rhinoplasty (nose job), and if this happens bruising and swelling are more common. The ENT surgeon will work in conjunction with a facial plastic surgeon to perform those procedures.

Skin Cancer
Use of tobacco (cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, or snuff) and alcoholic beverages are the most common cause of cancers of the mouth, throat, voice box, and tongue. In adults who do not smoke or drink, cancer of the throat can occur as a result of infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV). Prolonged exposure to sunlight is linked with cancer of the lip and is also established as a major cause of skin cancer.

Ulcer
Most cancers of the mouth or tongue cause a sore or swelling that doesn’t go away. These may be painless, which can be misleading. Bleeding may occur, but often not until late in the disease. If an ulcer or swelling is accompanied by lumps in the neck, you should be concerned. In addition, any sore or swelling in the mouth that does not go away after a week should be evaluated by one of our ENT physicians. Your doctor can determine if a biopsy (tissue sample test) is needed.
Calluses
The most common vocal cord lesions include vocal nodules also known as “singer’s nodes” or “nodes” which are similar to “calluses” of the vocal cords. They typically occur on both vocal cords opposite each other. These lesions are usually treated with voice rest and speech therapy (to improve the speaking technique thus removing the trauma on the vocal cords). Vocal cord polyp(s) or cyst(s) are other common vocal cord lesions caused by misuse, overuse, or trauma to the vocal cords and frequently require surgical removal after all nonsurgical treatment options (e.g., speech therapy) have failed.
Lesions
Benign noncancerous growths on the vocal cords are caused by voice misuse or overuse and from trauma or injury to the vocal cords. These lesions (“bumps”) on the vocal cord(s) alter vocal cord vibration. This abnormal vibration results in hoarseness and a chronic change in one’s voice quality, including roughness, raspiness, and an increased effort to talk.
