El Potro Mexican Restaurant

In Jacksonville, FL, there is "Mexican food," and then there is food from Mexico. If you want the former, with canned sauces, and/or thin, thin, thin cut beef in your bizteck, you can find a lot of places that seem higher rated than El Potro. And it's true that the El Potro chain has closed a number ot other locations in the last few years. leaving this 3rd Street location as one of only 2 operating restaurants in Jax.



And yet, if you like carnitas, with corn tortillas, there's no better place in Jax. If you hanker for tacos, you can't go wrong with the beef or chicken offerings here. If chimichangas are your thing, you'll leave happy and stuffed. If a full plate of tacquitos, with rice and beans, and Mexican salad is your thing, go nowhere else. If you like guacamole, order a serving as an additional dip for the chips served up front, with salsa, at no extra charge - the guac here is all avacado, with a touch of lime juice. The tortilla soup is good enough to cry over, as you order a second beer.



Lunch or dinner, this is the place to eat Mexican, when in North Florida. There's no cost cutting, no short portions, no lack of service. It's the kind of place your Mexican mother-in-law would operate, assuming you had a Mexican mother-in-law.
