Pain Management
Depending on the diagnosis, the appropriate treatment may be simple, such as pain-relief and fluids by nasogastric (stomach) tube. Cases that don’t respond to these treatments might require more aggressive treatment such as hospitalization with IV fluids and ongoing pain relief and careful monitoring. About 5-10% of horses showing signs of colic require colic surgery.
Skin Condition and Allergy Treatment
Think of blanketing as a commitment to take over the horse’s intricate control of its own body temperature. Blankets have the potential to cause problems, so the blanketed horse must be carefully monitored. Horses can become tangled in their blanket straps or blankets can shift, causing problems. It is important to remove the blanket routinely to monitor condition and watch for skin problems. Overheating under blankets is a common and potentially serious problem.

We have a top-of the line 14×17 modern cesium digital plate and digital x-ray system- the Next system by Sound. It is one of the finest equine digital radiograph systems available. Digital X-ray produces fantastic images that appear within seconds of being taken, allowing for real-time adjustments in x-ray technique, to get the most information possible. DR also allows us to develop an immediate treatment plan following diagnosis. We can produce high quality images of difficult-to-image areas such as the shoulder and neck with our system.

When you want to generally assess the state of your horse’s health, simply perform this exam. By practicing the WHE on your horse when they are in health, you will be better equipped to confidently perform the WHE when you suspect that your horse has a health-related problem. By sharing your findings with your equine veterinarian, you will assist them in determining the nature and severity of any problem or illness.
