Last year before the housing market really went South I was considering selling my house and downsizing a bit. I arranged for a home inspection and much to my surprise, was told that the bricks in the back of my fireplace were destroyed and had to be replaced. The inspector recommended I close off my fireplace and NEVER use it again, as the repairs would be to costly. I love to burn my fireplace, so I started getting estimates on repair cost. The first company I called (who is NOT local) told me that they did not even need to come look at my fireplace, that just by what I had told them, the repair cost would be between $800-$1,000. dollars. My next call was to Lighthouse Chimney Sweeps. When they arrived (on time), another inspection of my fireplace was conducted. I was surprised to find out I have what they call a Pre-fab metal fireplace and that those were not real brick in the back, but artificial brick refractory panels. They took the broken crumbled panel out and showed me where the heat had gone through the cracks and chared the metal box in the back. I'm very lucky i didn't burn my house down last winter. They made and replaced the panel, swept my chimney, and now my winter nights are jyst as warm and cozy as they ever were. They not only saved my fireplace, but they saved my HOME.
