Great Doctors

Doctor DeCraene is the best. I had a cat who HATED all Vets (Including him) but he was soooo good with her and understanding. He was the best vet she ever went to in all her 18 years. She's gone now but I have 2 kittens I take to Wise Road with full confidence in the care they are receiving.

Illness Treatment

Parasites Treatment and Control
There was a time when parasites like fleas, ticks, and roundworms were considered mostly a nuisance. Now, however, we know that parasites can cause serious illness and even death in pets. For example, ticks can transmit infections like Lyme disease, and fleas can transmit tapeworms and Bartonella – the bacteria that causes “cat-scratch fever” in humans. Another type of parasite, called a heartworm, is transmitted by mosquitoes. Heartworms live in your pet’s lungs and heart, causing damage to these organs, and sometimes even death. Intestinal parasites, like roundworms and hookworms, also threaten pets and are even transmissible to humans.

Skin Condition and Allergy Treatment
More serious but rare side effects, such as severe allergic reactions, may occur within minutes to hours after vaccination. Signs include vomiting, diarrhea, itchy skin, difficulty breathing and collapse. These allergic reactions can be life-threatening and are medical emergencies. Contact our office immediately, as your pet may require medical treatment.
Upper Respiratory Illness Treatment
Infectious Tracheobronchitis caused by Bordatella bronchisepta is more commonly known as Kennel Cough. Kennel Cough is a highly-contagious upper respiratory disease of dogs similar to Whooping Cough in people (caused by Bordatella pertussis). Disease caused by Bordatella is usually self-limiting, however complications can occur when there are multiple agents within the disease. Uncomplicated Kennel Cough is not a deadly disease and usually lasts about 2 weeks in duration. Complicated Kennel Cough can last up to 6 or even 8 weeks and can require medications.

Infection Treatment

Leptospirosis Treatment
Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that can affect the lungs, kidneys and liver. The disease is spread through the urine of other animals which can get into water or soil and can survive there for weeks to months. The vaccine used at Wise Road Animal Hospital is a "four-way" vaccine, meaning that it helps guard against 4 different strains of Leptospirosis. Your pet may have been drinking, swimming, or walking through contaminated water. Because of increased building and development into areas that were previously rural, pets may be exposed to more wildlife, such as raccoons, skunks, squirrels, opossums, or deer that are infected with Leptospirosis. Dogs also may pass the disease to each other, but this happens very rarely.
Parvovirus Infection Treatment
Parvovirus - a highly contagious and often deadly viral disease affecting fast growing cells as are in the gastrointestinal system causing severe diarrhea and vomiting. Parvovirus is transmitted from dog to dog via contact with feces.
Feline Retro Virus Treatment
If your cat goes outdoors (even just on the porch), lives in a home where cats are boarded, groomed or rescued, or may come in contact with another cat of questionable history, your Veterinarian may recommend the Feline Leukemia vaccine. Feline Leukemia virus is similar in nature to the HiV virus which causes AiDs in people. Feline Leukemia can not be transmitted from your cat to you however, it is an incurable and deadly disease.

From the very first day you bring a new pet home through the final days of its life, nutrition plays a critical role in your pet’s overall health and well-being. Many pet owners take nutrition for granted, in part because the availability of so many nutritionally complete commercial diets has taken much of the guesswork out of choosing a suitable diet for a pet. However, did you know that your pet’s nutritional needs change with age and activity level? Did you know that specially formulated diets can assist in the management of various medical conditions, including kidney disease, diabetes, arthritis, and heart disease? Do you know how many calories your pet should have each day and whether you are over- or underfeeding? Are you comfortable reading and interpreting pet food labels?
Kidney Disease Treatment
Lyme disease is caused by Borrelia burgdorferi and transmitted by ticks. Any pet or person that goes outside is exposed to ticks. Pets that are most at risk are those who accompany their owners camping, boating, fishing, hiking, visiting dense forest areas or any park or preserve with tall grass. Lyme disease is spread by ticks and can not be transmitted directly from a person to an animal or vise versa without a tick as the interim host. Lyme disease causes arthritis symptoms, eventually leads to kidney disease and in rare cases can cause heart disease or neurologic issues. Signs may not appear for weeks or even months after a tick bite. While Lyme disease is not usually life-threatening and can be cured relatively easily with a short course of antibiotics, due to it's prevalent nature in this region we recommend dogs be vaccinated especially if they are in the high-risk category. In addition to Lyme vaccination we also recommend flea and tick control.

No, we do not have the facilities or 24 hour staff necessary to care for boarders. Many of our clients use local boarding services or have a pet-sitter come to their home.
