Glaucoma is a group of eye disorders that cause progressive damage to the optic nerve, which is the structure that connects the eye to the brain. It usually occurs when the pressure in the eye itself is high. Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness in patients older than 60 years old in the United States.
Ophthalmology
Dr. Bellur’s research interests include improving patient care through the use of novel ophthalmic imaging techniques and advancements in local and systemic immunosuppression. He has numerous peer-reviewed publications and is a reviewer for American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Basic and Clinical Science Course. Outside of the office Dr. Bellur’s interests include photography, cooking, hiking, and traveling; he is always interested in hearing new restaurant recommendations.
Macular Degeneration
Macular Degeneration is the most common cause of irreversible blindness in the Caucasian population. It is characterized by a breakdown of the central retina.
Laser Eye Surgery
ICLs are an excellent choice for people with strong glasses or contact lens prescriptions who are not good candidates for LASIK or other laser eye surgeries. Candidates for ICL should be over twenty-one years old, have a stable prescription, and have good overall eye health.
Cataracts
A cataract is the gradual clouding of the lens inside the eye due to age or medical related changes. As lenses become more cloudy, they can cause visual symptoms including increased glare and haloes, difficulty driving (particularly at night), blurry vision, or the need for more light when reading. When left untreated, cataracts can even cause complete vision loss.
Cataract Surgery
Do you have cataracts and recently found out you need to have them removed by undergoing cataract surgery? Before you can do this, you’ll have to select an intraocular lens or IOL. One IOL now available at Washington Eye Institute is the Light Adjustable Lens.
Eye Exam
Common symptoms of retinal conditions include flashes of light in your vision, floaters, distortions, and sudden vision loss. Any of these symptoms warrant a prompt examination by an ophthalmologist. A clinic visit for a medical retina condition involves a comprehensive eye exam including a dilated eye exam. Specialized imaging or laboratory tests may be required to aid diagnosis and treatment. Treatment for retinal disease varies and often depends on the underlying cause. Medical retina treatment options include medicated eye drops, injections in or around the eye, and/or laser therapy, all with the goal of preserving or improving a patient’s vision.

Internal Medicine
Following medical school, he completed his internship at INOVA Fairfax, where he was awarded the ‘Best Teacher Award’ in Internal Medicine. He continued his ophthalmology training at the Georgetown University Hospital / Washington Hospital Center, where he served as Chief Resident of Education. During that time, he published numerous abstracts and papers, and presented his research nationally and internationally.
