The iStent Trabecular Micro-Bypass stent is a new surgical therapy for glaucoma that is designed to improve aqueous outflow to safely lower IOP and may reduce the number of medications required to control intraocular pressure in mild to moderate glaucoma.
Ophthalmology
An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor (M.D.) with a license to practice medicine in the state in which he/she practices. This doctor will have graduated from an accredited university undergraduate program with a bachelor's degree (or higher) and an accredited medical school in the United States or foreign country. Further training in medicine and surgery is obtained after medical school by completing an internship. This is a one-year supervised apprenticeship in a hospital in which the new doctor practices the diagnostic and therapeutic skills he learned in medical school. The training varies with the size of the hospital/hospital system and by whether the program is associated with an academic institution. After completing this program, an ophthalmologist must compete for and be accepted into an ophthalmology residency training program. This is a three-year apprenticeship in the medical and surgical treatment of eye disease. This is a total of eight years post-graduate training. The ophthalmology resident learns how to determine if an eye is functioning properly and if glasses or contact lenses are needed to optimize vision. Once this has been mastered, training begins in the fundamentals of the diagnosis and treatment of eye disease. This builds upon the education and practical skills that were received in medical school and internship. Even though the eye is a small structure, it is complex and the medical and surgical procedures that are used in this specialty take years of supervised training to do correctly. Once through with the residency, the ophthalmologist attempts specialty certification in his field by taking the Ophthalmology Boards, a grueling year-long process. Not all candidates pass and become Board Certified.
Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration is a group of diseases that damages the part of the retina responsible for central vision, causing a central blind spot to develop. It frequently affects both eyes. This is a disease that can prevent you from driving and reading efficiently. Most patients afflicted with macular degeneration retain peripheral vision, although variants of the disease exist that minimize peripheral vision as well. There are strong genetic tendencies in macular degeneration. Smoking at any time in your life amplifies the expression of these genes and should be avoided. Other risk factors that affect the development of macular degeneration include: female gender, obesity, Caucasian race, light colored eyes, prolonged sun exposure, a high fat diet and/or one that is low in nutrients and antioxidants, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. Blue light activates the molecule that is involved in causing the damage, making blue-blocking sunglasses helpful.

Visited Dr. Reiter for my annual eye exam. COVID-19 times and this office feels safe because the staff takes all the precautions making me feel protected and safe. Karen processed all of my paperwork quickly. Chuck could not have been nicer and more efficient. Doctor was on time and thorough. Liz showed me frame after frame; I purchased a pair of very sporty sunglasses with great coverage for walking and hiking as well as some stylish DUTZ frames from The Netherlands. Diabetic Retinopathy
Dr. Gary S. Reiter has been successfully treating diabetic eye diseases in residents of Newport Beach and Orange County for 25 years, utilizing state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment techniques. Diabetic retinopathy is damage to the retina (the inner eye) that, if left untreated, can eventually lead to blindness. It is often seen in association with diabetic neuropathy (nerve damage) and diabetic nephropathy (kidney damage). The early warning signs of diabetic retinopathy can be detected with regular office visits. Your visits are coordinated with your treating Internist or Endocrinologist in order to make sure that all efforts are made to keep your diabetes under control. There are two stages of diabetic retinopathy: Nonproliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (NPDR) and Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (PDR).

Ultrasound
During the surgery, the cloudy lens is removed through a small incision using ultrasound and replaced with an IOL that is chosen just for you. You will have the option of having your surgery done with a femtosecond laser for additional precision and astigmatism correction. Standard lens replacement will relieve the symptoms of your cataracts and greatly improve your vision. Some patients choose to have distance optimized vision, where glasses are used for near tasks and to correct astigmatism. Many patients, however, wish to minimize their use of glasses for both far and near vision and opt to select premium IOL surgery. Cosmetic Surgery
A pterygium usually occurs in the part of the eye that is most exposed to the environment. When blinking occurs, the last part of the eye that the eyelid covers is the area of the pterygium. If you have had cosmetic surgery and your eyes do not close all the way (lagophthalmos), there is more exposure, causing added redness, irritation and growth. Experts believe UV light, dust, low-humidity and wind, along with airborne environmental toxin exposure, are the likely causes of a pterygium. Genetics may also play a part.
