Dental Examination
If your child’s labial or lingual frenum is too short, it can restrict movement of the tongue and lip. This can make it difficult for your child to eat, chew and even smile because of the frenum getting in the way of normal movement. During a routine dental exam, we will be able to tell if your child is having issues because of the size and shape of their frenum. We will then discuss options concerning removing or altering the size of this connective tissue.
X-rays
Dental x-rays are often required to look for signs of decay, infection and to monitor the growth and positioning of a child or teen’s teeth. While most adults know the importance of having dental x-rays done, they often fear the amount of radiation that is needed to process these images on their child. At the office, the lowest radiation possible is used to take x-rays of your child’s teeth. This limits their exposure to the radiation that is being used while still producing high-quality digital x-rays. Because digital x-rays are used, the images of your child’s teeth are created immediately after the x-ray is taken. No processing in a dark room is required, which means a quicker and more thorough evaluation by the dentist.

Teeth Cleaning
Preventative care is crucial for the health of your child’s teeth and gums. If your child constantly forgoes their dental appointments, cavities can go undetected and excess buildup can cause issues with gingivitis and bad breath. Preventative care involves professional dental cleanings and exams done in-office as well as informative educational tools to help your child take better care of their teeth at home. Children should start seeing the dentist when their first baby teeth start to come in and every six months thereafter.
Fluoride Treatment
After your child’s first tooth appears, their pediatrician may recommend a fluoride treatment to prevent tooth decay. Fluoride is often applied by the pediatrician as well as your pediatric dentist. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends an oral health risk assessment for every six-month-old child and routine dental visits beginning in early childhood. One reason for early visits is that application of fluoride has been proven to decrease tooth decay.
Dental Sealants
Dental sealants are a thin coating that is painted on the teeth’s chewing surfaces. The back teeth are frequently sealed to protect them from tooth decay. The sealant bonds effectively to the grooves of each tooth, and shield it from cavities. Sealants are used in addition to brushing and flossing to keep food and bacteria from causing excess plaque on your child’s teeth.
Space Maintainers
Dr. Criss uses space maintainers to take the place of the child’s missing tooth. The maintainers keep the spacing of the child’s teeth aligned so their permanent teeth can come in properly, and the rest of the teeth stay lined up. Space maintainers take over the purpose of the baby tooth that was lost too soon and keep your child’s jaw developing correctly.

Fillings
If your child or teen’s teeth have begun to decay, the dentist will often recommend a filling. Aesthetic tooth-colored fillings, also known as composite fillings, are ideal for your child because they mimic the coloring of the surrounding teeth and do not contain metal like in the old amalgam fillings that adults are so used to. These tooth colored fillings are chosen to specifically match your child’s natural tooth color so that the filling blends seamlessly into the rest of their smile.
Crowns
Zirconia comes in solid zirconia and highly translucent zirconia. No matter which substance your dentist uses, CAM or Computer Aided Manufacturing and CAD or Computer Aided Designing are technologies used to make these crowns. Solid zirconia crowns remain stronger longer than to the translucent types of zirconia crowns.

Pulpotomy
Dental caries (cavities) and traumatic injury are the main reasons for a tooth to require pulp therapy. Pulp therapy is often referred to as a “nerve treatment”, “children’s root canal”, “pulpectomy” or “pulpotomy”. The two common forms of pulp therapy in children’s teeth are the pulpotomy and pulpectomy.
Root Canal Treatment
Explain the reason for the removal to the child. If a tooth is so badly decayed that a root canal can’t save it, it needs to come out.

Gingivectomy and Gingivoplasty
Gingiva is the dental term for the tissue of the gums. The surgical removal of gum tissue is called gingivectomy. If your child has gum disease, also known as gingivitis, he or she will develop pockets in the gums that make the teeth and mouth hard to clean. When these areas around the gums get affected by calculus and plaque, bacteria, infections and tooth decay occur.

Dental Implants
Dental appliances are placed on the targeted teeth. Slings and retainers are usually used for this purpose. Temporary anchoring devices like mini implants and mini screws are also sometimes used to get a few crooked teeth into the right position in the mouth. While limited tooth movement is not an option for everyone with a crooked tooth or teeth, it remains a good treatment choice for many individuals having cosmetic procedures or restorative treatments on their teeth.
