Kitchen Remodeling
BEFORE: While we felt badly for the clientâ€™s experience with the remodeler they fired, having to order new cabinetry allowed us to redesign the kitchen and incorporate a new hallway between the kitchen, mudroom and dining to allow the client to close off the mudroom when entertaining and still allow direct access from the kitchen to the dining room.

Framing
The After Kitchen has a suite of stainless-steel GE CafÃ© Appliances. Cream and tan tones create a calming effect. Oil rubbed bronze pulls and lanterns compliment the cherry woodland finish of the island. While our design called for replacing the bay window with this new three window unit; the exterior wall framing was sagging and needed to be completely rebuilt.
Tile Installation
The kitchen features a large island with hubbyâ€™s butcher block at one end. The double ovens are on “his” side of the kitchen. Perimeter Upper and Lower Frameless Cabinets in Moonlight White. Island Frameless Cabinets and Paneling Surround in Coventry Gray. Tops are Mont Blanc Leathered Quartzite. Argento Bell Pendants in polished nickel. Backsplash 3X9 ceramic tiles.
Ceiling Fans
Inside the porch: The size of the porch allows for dining and seating space for six people. This was a specific objective for the client. White painted V-Joint ceiling boards create an attractive finish. Recessed lights on dimmers, a ceiling fan, AV speakers and an outdoor TV make the space more enjoyable and an extension of the interior living area.

Skylight Repair/Replacement
After: The porch was designed and built to allow lots of natural light to flow into the home. Southeast facing; the high ceiling, tall screened walls and skylights facilitate morning light entering the home.
Cabinet Installation

Room Additions
A dining room addition was constructed off of the back of the house. The screen porch was converted to a mud room entry area and home office.
New Construction
After a 19-year career as head of Corporate Advertising and Brand Management with Verizon, Wilma joined Bowers in 2001 to help manage the familyâ€™s growing business. Wilma makes sure that Bowersâ€™ business processes accentuate the companyâ€™s ability to offer the best design and construction services possible. In addition to her passion to make sure Bowersâ€™ clients are completely happy with their renovation experience, Wilma has dedicated her philanthropic energy over the past 20 years toward student health and wellness. She served as a Fairfax County School Board appointee to the Curriculum Advisory Council and was a PTA board member for 14 years. Wilma is currently the Chairman of Women for Madison; an organization dedicated to creating scholarship opportunities for James Madison University students. She is also is a member of the Just Neighbors marketing committee; a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing immigration legal services to at-risk immigrants in Northern Virginia.
Demolition
Our clients loved the location of their home, but the kitchen was perpetually dark; and dated. They wanted a renewed kitchen that was more open and light-filled and a proper main level mudroom/laundry room. Sadly, this client had hired and fired another remodeler... after partial demolition and cabinets ordered. We assessed the cabinets for both the kitchen and the mudroom/laundry room and unfortunately found they were all the wrong sizes. Luckily, we were able to work with the cabinet supplier to return them and partially refund the client. This gave us the opportunity to start from scratch and redesign the space, making it better. The finished product meets all their needs, and they love their renewed home!
Sunrooms
When our client inherited his parentâ€™s 1967 Colonial home in a great neighborhood, he and his wife wanted to respect the history of the home but needed a larger, more updated, and functional kitchen. The original home was a typical traditional floor plan with den, formal dining and living room and small eat-in kitchen on the main level. The parents had added a large â€œsunroomâ€ addition on the back of the home in the 1980s. With ample living space in the den and sunroom, the formal living room was never used. The solution for this family was to move the formal dining furniture to the living room space and re-repurpose the formal dining room... joining it with the adjacent kitchen space to create a more spacious and modern kitchen.

Landscaping and Fencing

Driveways
Applying a creative solution to achieve a functional/practical design solution: The clientsâ€™ ideal location for the mudroom was between the kitchen and driveway. However, there was no space in the kitchen to allow for a new doorway. The client didnâ€™t want the kitchen disturbed, so we had to get creative.
Retaining Walls
For the space to be located near their dining room for ease of access when entertaining and complement/retain their existing stone patio and retaining walls

Window Installation/Replacement
Gutters
Going beyond the design and construction of the porch, we used multiple innovative techniques to solve an existing drainage issue. While constructing the porch, we: Regraded the soil underneath the new porch to create better water diversion â€¢ Installed a new underground drainage system â€¢ Created a 24-inch River Jack bed on two sides of the porch facing the slope to further help divert water to the new system â€¢ Built a sturdy CMU foundation with 18-inch clearance crawl space â€¢ All gutters run into the underground drainage system
Garage Door Repair/Replacement
The Before Kitchen peninsula created a narrow passage to the garage door and laundry room. The garage door was the most frequently used door in the home. The clients park in the garage and use it to come and go from the house daily. Therefore, the fact that this area wasnâ€™t working well for the client was significant.
Siding
To create a more modern curb appeal, the After front elevation has new siding and trim details. A calm off-white paint with new modern, stained-grade, front door. Larger black framed windows and new black framed French Doors to the front porch present stark changes, but the home still fits in the neighborhood. The most dramatic changes focus on the rear 2-story addition and the significant interior re-design.
Residential Roof Repair
Machiche hardwood was also used on the decking for continuity. Powder coated black stainless-steel posts with stainless-steel cables expand on the modern theme. Inset lighting on each riser promote safety. Waterproof roofing membrane under decking allows a finished wood ceiling.

Masonry
CREATIVE SOLUTION TO OPENING THE SPACE: REMOVING THE LOAD BEARING WALL. Removing the load bearing wall meant installing an engineered steel beam to support the upper level of the home. The new steel beam and associated support columns need to sit on solid fill masonry.
