Macular Degeneration
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of vision loss in individuals over the age of 50. The name of the condition derives from its cause: damage to the macula, the most sensitive spot on the retina, required for clarity in the center of the visual field. The macula transmits electrical signals through the optic nerve to the brain. Damage to the macula results in retinal tissue degeneration that gradually worsens, diminishing or destroying central vision.
Laser Eye Surgery
During the endothelial keratoplasty procedure, the surgeon will make an incision in the sclera, the white part of the eye. This incision allows the surgeon to access the cornea, and remove the damaged endothelial tissue using a microkeratome blade, the same instrument that is used during LASIK surgery. The donor tissue is then folded and implanted inside the eye. After the donor tissue has been placed, it will either unfold on its own or be unfolded by the surgeon. An air bubble is injected to properly position the graft. This procedure is performed with a topical anesthetic to minimize any potential discomfort. The actual procedure takes up to 45 minutes to perform.
Cataracts
Dr. Chang is on the executive committee of the American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgery (ASCRS), which is the largest international sub-specialty organization for cataract and refractive surgeons, numbering over 9000 members. He formerly chaired the organization’s Cataract Committee and served as the 2012-2013 ASCRS president.
Cataract Surgery
Dr. Chang has written numerous papers and chapters on cataract surgery, and is the author or editor of four best-selling textbooks on advanced cataract surgical techniques and artificial lens implants. His textbook Mastering Refractive IOLs covers the new lens implants, such as multifocal, accommodating, and toric lenses, and is considered the most comprehensive and authoritative textbook on the subject. He is the Chief Medical Editor for EyeWorld, one of the most widely read specialty trade journals for ophthalmologists.
Eye Exam

Dr. Grewal graduated Phi Beta Kappa and with Honors from Davidson College in North Carolina. After one year of basic science research at Johns Hopkins University, she attended Duke University School of Medicine. Dr. Grewal graduated medical school with a special achievement award from the American Medical Women’s Association. Dr. Grewal then completed her Internship in Internal Medicine at Stanford University Hospital and her Ophthalmology Residency at the University of California – San Francisco. While at UCSF, Dr. Grewal received the Asbury Award in clinical research. Dr. Grewal has a special interest in glaucoma, dry eyes and general eye disorders. Dr. Grewal is Adjunct Clinical Faculty in the Department of Ophthalmology at Stanford University School of Medicine. She has been at Altos Eye Physicians since 1999.

Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that affects the eyes. The length of time a person has diabetes determines his or her likelihood of developing diabetic retinopathy. It is the most common diabetic eye complication, and a leading cause of blindness in American adults. Diabetic retinopathy causes the blood vessels that supply nourishment to the retina, the light-sensitive lining in the back of the eye where vision is focused, to weaken, swell and leak, causing a loss of vision.
