There are several ways to classify the different types of glaucoma. Traditionally, they have been classified as open-angle glaucoma and closed-angle glaucoma. Within the eye, there is a constant production of fluid as well as drainage of fluid. The area through which the fluid leaves the eye through the drain, called the trabecular meshwork. In open angle glaucoma, the iris (colored portion of eye) is not blocking the trabecular meshwork. Open angle glaucoma is more common and will often go undetected because the rise in pressure tends to be slow and mild and as a result there are usually no initial symptoms. The vision worsens slowly over time which is hardly noticeable but without treatment, blindness can ensue.Eye doctor Treatment includes medications (eye drops) or laser (selective laser trabeculoplasty, SLT). SLT involves placing approximately 100 marks into the drainage area of the eye to help the fluid leave the eye.So, an eye doctor plays a major role here.

Macular Degeneration
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of visual loss in Americans above 55 years of age. It affects more than 10 million Americans. AMD is a chronic disease marked by the deterioration of the central portion of the retina and therefore results in central visual loss. Macular degeneration occurs more commonly in Caucasians, smokers, and those with a positive family history of macular degeneration. There are two main types of macular degeneration, dry and wet macular degeneration. The dry form is more common. Treatment includes anti-oxidant vitamins and supplements. The wet form involves leaking blood vessels underneath the retina; treatment involves injections or laser.

Diabetic retinopathy is the most common diabetic eye disease and a leading cause of blindness in American adults. Early diabetic retinopathy usually has no symptoms. However, worsening diabetic retinopathy can lead to visual loss and blindness. Diabetic retinopathy is the most common diabetic eye disease and a leading cause of blindness in American adults. The retina is the like the film in a camera; in which it is the light sensing film on the back of the eye that captures the images. In diabetic retinopathy, blood vessels break and leak, resulting in bleeding and leakage of fluid. This results in poor oxygen supply to the eye; new, abnormal blood vessels grow, which are weak and bleed. Treatment includes laser, injections, or surgery.

Dr. Song completed her postgraduate training in ophthalmology at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, FL, which was ranked the #1 ophthalmology program by U.S. News & World Report. She was the recipient of the Pan-American Clinical Scholarship, which gave her the opportunity to work with ophthalmologists in Lima, Peru. She then completed an extensive 2-year American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS) fellowship in ophthalmic plastic, orbital, and reconstructive surgery at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City, IA. She was in private practice in New York, where she was clinical instructor at New York Eye & Ear Infirmary. Then, she became Assistant Professor and Director of Oculoplastics at Loma Linda University. She is Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the USC/Keck School of Medicine.

Botox combats wrinkles that are created when nerve cells within the muscles beneath the skin release a chemical called acetylcholine. This chemical triggers a muscle contraction that creates wrinkles. The Botox product, medically known as Botulinum Toxin Type A, is an injectable compound that disrupts the release of acetylcholine, which essentially paralyzes the muscle and stops the contraction. Results are fully evident within one week after treatment and remain for a minimum of three months. Botox typically reduces wrinkles by 80 percent. Eyelids can be affected in many ways. If only the skin is redundant, this is called dermatochalasis. Repair of redundant eyelid skin is called blepharoplasty. Blepharoplasty can be performed to remove redundant skin or to create an eyelid crease (such as in Asians, in persons who were not born with an eyelid crease, or those who suffered trauma). If the actual eyelid itself is too low, which occurs commonly with time, this is called ptosis. This is repaired by removing eyelid muscle tissue and reattaching the muscles. The waveguide CO2 laser is very helpful in removing moles, bumps, skin tags and warts. The 10.6 micron CO2 laser is regarded as superior to conventional scalpel techniques because it precisely targets only the affected area. Due to its ability to achieve hemostasis and a very thin (50 microns) zone of thermal necrosis, the CO2 laser allows for a more conservative excision/ablation than a standard blade. The removal of skin lesions with the CO2 laser often does not require suturing. The area treated with the CO2 laser heals by secondary intention which results in smooth new skin.
