Oral Cancer Screening

Teeth Cleaning
Increased frequency of oral hygiene appointments. Although normally tooth cleanings and scalings are performed once every six months, patients with minimal periodontal disease can often control its progress by increasing the frequency of scalings and exams to once every four months or once every two months.
Fluoride Treatment
NOTE: If your teeth become overly sensitive, your dentist may recommend a different treatment regime and/or to use an intermittent topical fluoride treatment. This is not necessary for most patients.
Dental Sealants
A dental sealant is a thin plastic film painted on the chewing surfaces of molars and premolars (the teeth directly in front of the molars). They were developed through dental research in the 1950s and first became available commercially in the early 1970s. Crowns
The extensive preparation may be done in order to remove decay that has penetrated too close to the nerve. The extensive drilling may also be done to prepare the tooth for a crown (cap) or other large preparation for a restoration. The pulp may or may not abscess immediately in these cases. It may take many years for a problem to develop. The infected pulp tissue may or may not be painful. It may or may not be visible on a dental radiograph taken of the area. A tooth with this type of an abscess is not usually extracted because the infection can be removed by performing Endodontic Therapy on the tooth. This routine procedure can save your tooth and enable you to avoid the harmful effects of tooth loss. It is successful in over 90 percent of the teeth in which the treatment is completed.

Root Canal Treatment
Each tooth has one to four root canals. These are small, hollow channels in the tooth filled with nerves, blood vessels and soft tissue. When these become infected and require removal, a root canal filling is placed after careful enlargement of the root canal and removal of all the infected tissue.

Gum Recession is the process in which the tissue that surrounds the teeth pulls away from a tooth, exposing more of the tooth or the tooth’s root. This can cause damage to supporting bone. Gum allograft (grafting) is a periodontal plastic surgery procedure designed to help restore damaged gum tissue. Gingiva that has been damaged due to periodontal disease, trauma, or any other factors can benefit from this periodontal surgery. Allografts have been used safely in millions of procedures for numerous years. Conventional methods of soft tissue grafting required harvesting patient’s own tissue through a series of intricate incisions from the palate of the mouth. Although these methods have proven to be quite effective, patients often complain of discomfort following the procedure. Gum allograft is a great alternative to conventional soft tissue grafting methods.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral Surgery
Purpose: Teeth and jaws do not occlude (come together) in an acceptable position for many reasons. Some of them are fillings or bridges that have been placed over a period of years, orthodontics, developmental defects, oral surgery, trauma, malocclusion (poor bite), bruxism and clenching.
Tooth Extractions
Healing from tooth extractions continues for up to 18 months. Shrinkage of gums and bone may occur during that time, but it slows thereafter. You may elect to have a second reline of the denture 18 months after the initial surgery.
Bone Grafting
Though Dr. Lee is based in San Diego, California, where Dr. Lyford practices and teaches with him as well, Dr. Lee and Dr. Lyford perform more complex surgery together in the New Hampshire office 8-9 times per year. Many procedures they perform are more complex and demanding which lends itself well to working as a team. This collaboration allows for faster procedures making treatment more comfortable for patients both during and after the procedures. Treatments that Drs. Lyford and Lee implement are MIT (Minimally Invasive Tunneling) gum grafting, sinus bone grafting, immediate placement of implants after tooth extraction, full arch immediate restoration after placement of multiple implants and complex bone grafting in combination with implant placement are examples of some of the procedures they perform together.
