P.O. Box 600, 71644. Established in 1987, the Varner Unit of the Arkansas Department of Correction provides substance abuse treatment and academic and vocational education programs to inmates. It employs more than 400 people and has a capacity of accommodating over 1,600 inmates. The unit is operated by the Arkansas Department of Correction, which works for the care, custody and control of all inmates in a safe, humane and secure environment. The department is responsible for providing appropriate facilities for inmates sentenced by the courts. It offers various programs to strengthen work ethics, as well as opportunities for spiritual, mental and physical growth. The department provides specialty habilitation programs for inmates with developmental disabilities. Most of its facilities feature a library and clinic.
