Many survey respondents perceived that children with few teeth may be too young to see the dentist, or they otherwise indicated a belief that baby teeth, or primary teeth, aren’t important enough to need care or attention. Lack of dental insurance was also cited as a reason for not taking infants and children to the dentist, though far less frequently.

Fluoride Treatment
Pediatric dentists are highly trained in the specific needs of children and adolescents. They are qualified to perform oral health exams on infants, in which they can assess the risks of dental cavities and how this risk may pass from the mother to the child. They can also provide preventative dental care, like routine cleanings or recommended fluoride treatments, and can counsel patients on diet and nutrition to improve oral health. Pediatric dentists are also proficient in habit counseling; for example, when infants use a pacifier or children suck their thumb, this can lead to oral health issues, and pediatric dentists are trained in therapies that help discourage these habits. If necessary, pediatric dentists can assess the mouth to determine if orthodontic treatment is necessary to either straighten the teeth or correct the bite. Of course, they can also repair dental cavities and fix other defects in the teeth, and they can care for dental injuries like knocked-out or fractured teeth. They can also diagnose oral conditions that may be related to other systemic conditions, like diabetes, asthma, hay fever, congenital heart defects, and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and they can work with their young patients and their parents to address these conditions. Pediatric dentists are also trained to treat and manage gum diseases and oral conditions that can affect the periodontium of children and adolescents, including dental injuries and inflammation or damage caused by trauma to the oral cavity. Some of the conditions children may face include oral ulcers, which can be caused by vitamin deficiency, acidic foods, allergic response, or injury; mucoceles, which form when the salivary ducts are blocked due to trauma; a short frenulum, which is the small piece of membrane that attaches the tongue to the floor of the mouth; and pediatric periodontal disease
Dental Sealants
Dental sealants: Dental sealants are another way to reduce your toddlers risk of tooth decay. A sealant is a protective, plastic coating which is applied to the teeth in liquid form and then hardened into a hard, clear plastic on the chewing surface of the molars. Sealants are really beneficial in protecting the posterior teeth which can easily trap food and bacteria in the grooves and fissures on their surface.

Root Canal Treatment

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral Surgery
If your child is having a dental procedure that requires general anesthesia, it is very important for them to follow all the rules regarding eating and drinking during a specified period preceding the procedure. The parameters of these rules depend on the patient’s age, and your child’s oral surgery team will clearly explain the rules to you and to your child. Generally, infants should avoid ingesting anything for 4 to 6 hours before the procedure. Children up to age 12 are usually instructed to avoid solid foods or non-clear liquids beginning at midnight the night before the procedure and are allowed to drink clear liquids the morning of the procedure, up to 2 hours before the scheduled time. When the child takes medication in the mornings, discuss this with the child’s doctor or the nurse who plans the surgical treatment; in some cases, it may be recommended that the child forgo their daily medication on the day of the procedure, but it is usually okay to take it.
Tooth Extractions
To obtain a doctorate of dental medicine, or DMD degree, a candidate must first receive an undergraduate degree and then attend dental school, eventually passing a state licensure exam that allows them to practice dentistry. To obtain a DDS degree, which stands for “doctor of dental surgery,” a dentist who has completed the necessary training for a DMD trains in a clinical setting for 4 to 6 years after dental school. Pediatric oral surgeons are qualified to perform the same surgical treatments as oral surgeons, but they gain experience and additional qualification in conditions that specifically are more likely to be experienced by children. Certain surgical procedures, like root canals, are not particularly common among young people, but when the root of a primary tooth is infected, a root canal can encourage a positive, healthy outcome when the adult teeth are ready to erupt, and all oral surgeons must be familiar and comfortable with the procedure. For this reason, a pediatric oral surgeon may seek continuing education opportunities so that they stay informed of technical and medical innovations in a vital treatment they may not perform often. Pediatric oral surgeons perform tooth extractions for a variety of clinical reasons, including routine removal of the wisdom teeth, and extractions that precede orthodontic treatment. They also repair bones that have broken in the face or jaw, perform biopsies and jaw alignment surgeries when needed, and remove cysts and tumors. Many of the surgical treatments performed by pediatric oral surgeons can have a dramatic effect on the long term health of the mouth, either by treating infection or by adjusting the bite and extracting crowded teeth, laying the foundations for a healthy mouth and a confident smile that can last a lifetime with continued attention and care.

A native of Anderson, IN, Samantha graduated high school from Anderson High in 2006. She attended Kaplan College to achieve a Dental Assisting Diploma in 2007, got her radiology license and became certified through Ivy Tech's Expanded Functions Dental Assisting Program and Coronal Polishing and Caries Prevention Course in 2011. Samantha pursued a dental career in response to her own dental journey. “I was always embarrassed about my smile,” Samantha said. “I had braces four times, so I wanted to help others be confident in their smiles.”
