The drywall was a particular challenge. "I was hesitant the first time I got a look at the scaffolding. I'm chubby, you know, and I was doing it alone and at night," she says. "But it's like anything — the more you do it, the more you're able to do it — even on scaffolding three stories up."

It took another month of weekends to get the walls constructed. The masons were experts and the walls were perfectly straight. We spent October 1995 working on the framing for the lower level. All the framing was done in 2x6s, including the interior walls throughout the house. The purpose of this was to create thicker walls which would lend themselves to more creative decorating inside in the Santa Fe style.

The owners are building the entire home almost all by themselves on the weekends. Both work full time jobs in San Diego. They have, so far, contracted out only the grading, septic installation, hollow concrete brick-laying of the lower level wall, and the tile roof. The house ( see plans ) includes three levels, a lower level day-light basement, the main 35 foot diameter (dome) level, and the loft inside the dome as well. They also opted for the cupola to provide light and ventilation. The dome is built into the slope of the mountain so that one side does not have an extension. The other four possible extensions were built, to include a 6 foot entrance, a 4 foot living room extension, a 10 foot dining room extension and a 4 foot guest bedroom extension. The lower level comprises the master bedroom and adjoining sitting/television room. This room has a fireplace with a pellet-burning insert as the main heating source in the home. Also on the lower level are the master bathroom, laundry/utility room, the workshop and two storage rooms (one under the stairs to the main level). The main level is comprised of the entrance, living room, walk-in pantry, kitchen, formal dining room, guest bedroom, and large bathroom. The total square footage of the three levels, including the open-rail loft above the living room and open to the cupola, is 2760 square feet.

Downstairs shows an excellent use of extensions. The extensions are used for the two downstairs bedrooms as well as the large kitchen and dining area. This leaves the interior of the dome for the living room/family room. The effective use of skylights provides abundant natural lighting in all rooms.

This is a custom built house using a 3/8 dome. It has 3 bedrooms, 2 1/2 bath, living room, family room, dining room, den, sunroom, kitchen, and utility room. They plan to add a guest suite over the garage, basement theater, disco, game room, weight room and full bath.

Window Installation/Replacement
We work with a licensed architect who has spent many years designing domes. If you are interested in custom plans, send in your sketches along with $25.00 and our architect will critique your ideas and give you a price to draw a set of plans. You will work directly with the architect on your plans. First, he will do a preliminary drawing from your sketches and his ideas. After you review that, the design will be further refined. When you agree on the design he will finish the set with foundation, framing, and roof plans. There will also be sections and elevations in addition to door and window schedules. The plans will be stamped by him with a California Architect stamp.

Additional space can be added to the dome's main floors by extending outward from the dome. These extensions can be placed along any of the dome's five natural openings. Extensions can be used to adjoin domes, build entryways, solariums, dining rooms, covered porches, and the like, and to expand existing rooms. Timberline carries extension kits ranging from 4 feet to 16 feet for all of our standard dome sizes.

Asphalt shingles are the most common roofing material as it is easy to work with and very attractive. It comes in a variety of colors and textures and is affordable. Other options include wood shingles, metal shingles and spray on roofs. Back to Top
Residential Roof Replacement/Installation
The roof is made of a fibrous-cement product called Hardie-Shake, and is manufactured under the same name. Jerome Lampro (Jerome Lampro Roofing, Encinitas, CA.) was hired to do the roofing as he came highly recommended as having previously roofed over 60 domes. We visited several of these domes and his customers were highly satisfied. There have been no leaks and the Hardie-shake is guaranteed for 50 years. That was enough for us!

The answer again lies in the shape of the geodesic structure. The lower the total outside surface area (walls and ceilings) the greater the efficiency in energy use for heating and cooling. A dome has approximately one-third less surface area to the outside than a box-style structure. The amount surface area exposed to the elements has a much greater impact on energy efficiency than insulation values. Additionally, heat loss from the foundation of a home is generally more dependent on perimeter length than floor area. A dome, having a smaller perimeter/square footage ratio than a box-style home, will lose less heat from the foundation.
