Some patients come through the emergency room, where a CT scan or MRI showed something unusual in the brain. Other times, a primary care physician may refer a patient who has a mild neurological deficit and an abnormal finding on CT or MRI of the brain.

Dr. Foroohar's office is located on the fourth floor of the Busse Center for Specialty Medicine. Once you enter the Northwest Community Hospital campus, the building is just north of the emergency room.

Lung Cancer
Only when it's the consensus of the conference do we treat somebody. The conference includes several neurosurgeons, radiation oncologists, oncologists and other surgeons, such as a thoracic surgeon for treating lung cancer.

Once inside the brain, Brainlab helps determine how much of the tumor has been removed. Tools such as surgical instruments and equipment such as the microscope, endoscope or ultrasound can be used in addition to the wand where Brainlab will display their position on the patient's MRI.

She was referred to Dr. Foroohar by her internist. “He had ordered an MRI to help diagnose my chronic neck and shoulder pain,” she recalls. “When the MRI showed that I had degenerative disc disease at two levels, he told me I needed to see a neurosurgeon.”

A brain tumor does not always mean cancer. If you are experiencing symptoms that may indicate a brain tumor, Dr. Mina Foroohar will carefully evaluate you and order imaging studies such as MRIs, MRAs, and CT scans so she can confirm a diagnosis.
Chemotherapy
For primary tumors, the patient's prognosis depends on the tumor grade, how much of the tumor can be removed and how it responds to radiation and chemotherapy.

She completed an internship in general surgery at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke's Medical Center, which is now Rush University Medical Center, in Chicago. Dr. Foroohar also completed her neurosurgery residency at Rush. She was the chief resident in the Department of Neurosurgery at Rush, and at Cook County Medical Center, now John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, in Chicago.
Orthopedics
The percentage of women neurosurgery residents is less than that of women in general surgery, otolaryngology, thoracic surgery and orthopedics.
Minimally Invasive Surgery
Microdiscectomy —A minimally invasive surgery that involves removing a lumbar herniated disc through a tiny incision using a microscope. The surgery is usually done on an outpatient basis, and patients can go home the same day.
Joint Replacement
“Back surgery can involve hardware, and no one understands hardware and putting in screws better than orthopedic surgeons,” she adds. “Everything they do, whether it's joint replacement or fixing a fracture, involves hardware. So there's a lot to be gained from neurosurgeons working with orthopedic surgeons. You obtain a much better understanding of hardware—I myself have learned so much about spine biomechanics.”

Dr. Foroohar has been in practice in Arlington Heights since 2001 and founded her private practice, Northwest Neurosurgery Institute, LLC, in 2006. She is affiliated with Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, Illinois, and specializes in diagnosing and treating conditions of the central, peripheral and autonomic nervous system.

Lesions
A lesion is simply any change in tissue—whether due to a tumor, inflammation, blood, infection, scar tissue or dead cells resulting from a stroke. If your MRI or CT scan shows one or more lesions in the brain, the next step is to determine its nature; then I can recommend an appropriate treatment plan.

Spine injuries can affect the neck, as well as the upper or lower back. Injuries to the neck and back can result from car accidents, sports injuries, on-the-job accidents, lifting injuries—even working around the house.
Physical Therapy
In most cases, patients with a herniated lumbar disc improve with conservative treatments, including anti-inflammatory medications, painkillers and physical therapy. But when conservative treatment methods are not enough, lumbar spine surgery can help patients with low-back pain find relief and get back to living a normal life.
