- General Info
- Nikk has been teaching professionally for over 13 years as a multi-instrumentalist and experienced instructor in voice, piano, and guitar, and works exclusively with over 100 students each week both in private and group classes. He has travelled across the U.S. performing on countless stages and in front of media networks including MTV and Disney. Nikk has held private audiences with dozens of record producers and platinum selling artists with affiliations including Rascal Flatts, Colbie Caillat, Carrie Underwood, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Chris Brown, Michael W. Smith, Hillsong United, Mark Schultz, and Third Day. His songwriting and production work has made its way into the hands of such record companies/distribution reps including Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Studios Production Company, Indasoul Entertainment, CSM Words and Music, Upscale Records, Centricity Records, and others. He's received radio mention, as well as newspaper interviews (Lansing State Journal, Noise). His original work has received positive acclaim from well recognized writers and artist development teams such as Marc Williams, Shele Sondheim, Don Poythress, James Tealy, and he's shaken hands with those that write and produce most of what's on radio today. Outside of the limelight, Nikk has trained students internationally and has had the pleasure of watching some sign record contracts, shoot music videos, perform live on television, and mature into their own musical successes. Nikk has been a privately contracted piano accompanist for theatre programs in the Lansing, MI area, as well as having served on staff as a music director for various churches. Nikk was born into a family chock-full of professional singers and musicians on both sides. Needless to say, music was inevitably to be part of his future. Recognizing many teachers, band mates, producers, managers, and songwriters who've poured into him their knowledge and love of music, he considers himself extremely blessed. Taking what his mentors have helped him to achieve, and sharing that with students of his own, he feels is far more rewarding than any other credit. Recalling past students, he mentions that one thing he loves about teaching is being able to hear potential in someone even if that person can't hear it in themselves. Whether it be supplementing an awareness and knowledge of vocal mechanics with an already skillful singer, or talking new technique to discover untapped potential, what he loves most is imparting inspiration into his students and hearing them say, "I didn't know I could do that!" Nikk states that the more you love something, the more you want to share it with others. Music carries so much passion. To nurture that in a student is awesome. Helping them grow and develop their abilities, and watching them succeed is one of the greatest experiences in the world.

I had Nikk as an instructor for many years back when he was teaching in the Lansing area. He ended up moving to a better studio and I decided to drive 25 minutes out of town just for my weekly sessions with him (he was that good).
Nikk always seemed more excited to teach than I was to learn. His drive and inspiration really set an internal desire in me to succeed, and now I have a life skill and hobby that I use everyday.

Thanks Phil! It has been a long time since the beginning, and a lot of great memories.
I've always loved to sing, but never thought I had much of a voice. Taking private voice lessons with Nikk has helped me tremendously in developing proper vocal technique and finally discovering my core sound! Nikk May is an excellent teacher and vocal coach.
My daughter sings in her high school choir and loves getting involved in her school's musical theatre productions. Nikk has helped immeasurably in every role she's done! He also spends time helping her with choral music and preparing her for solo auditions. Nikk May is an amazing vocal teacher and we're so fortunate to have found him.

Nikk is a very talented singer and musician, and his inspiration is infectious! He keeps lessons fun and exciting, spending time on Amy's vocal and musical interests as well as expanding her tastes and abilities into more diverse repertoire. Her progress in both singing and playing the piano has been quite impressive since studying with Nikk. I recommend!

My daughter takes singing lessons with Nikk and he's great! His approach is excellent and his methods are practical. Many teachers struggle through the errors of misplacing voices with unsuitable material, however Nikk does an excellent job of matching a singer's vocal build to correct technique, suitable content, and proper structure of their lesson.
