I moved to NYC at the beginning of the year and the first thing I did was enroll in the professional acting 2- week intensive. The approach and tools used at The Barrow Group resonate with me and I find myself using these tools everyday. During this two week intensive, we studied with Seth, Lee, Stephen and Laura. They are all amazing and every session was such a gift. We all grew from this course and I’ve experienced and witness the most beautiful performances the more and more we applied these tools. This is a very special place and community. Not only did I leave a better actor, I left feeling more comfortable being myself and that is always enough.

I have taken 3 online classes with The Barrow Group and I'm already signing up for the fourth one. I would highly recommend it to anybody starting their screenwriting journey. I have also heard great things about their acting and playwriting classes.

I have had an incredible experience during each class I've taken at TBG (and that's a lot!). Would recommend The Barrow Group for anyone who's interested in developing their craft, whether that be acting or directing/writing.

The Barrow Group is the most supportive and nurturing acting school New York City. No matter your level of training the teachers at the Barrow will guide you through a nuts and bolts approach to storytelling that cuts out all of the fat and gets to the human and practical tools to be an effective, engaging and creative artist. Lee Brock has been my teacher for years and besides being such a supportive teacher and mentor she is so direct and simple in her approach to getting the best out of an actor. One direction is all you need from Lee to make your acting soar. If you are an actor get to the Barrow!

Learning the craft of acting?
Are you a pro who's looking to find a new approach?

I've found the Barrow approach easy to apply and a revolution in terms of results.

Each scene became a step forward in presence and craft.
Each class became the best night of theater I'd seen.

Check it out.
And, I recommend auditing a single a session.

The Barrow Group has been fantastic to me from day 1. I really appreciate their philosophy for teaching and I cannot wait to see what else I learn going forward. I have taken 3 courses so far and feel like I can really grow here. If you are wondering about acting, improv, or something else they offer especially as a beginning student - do it! Such a good space with good people.

I’m beyond thrilled to be a part of The Barrow Group! As a new member I feel completely at home, both with the people I’ve met and the fantastic location (huge studio spaces and a really great lounge area).
I just finished my second class, the Professional Film/TV Acting II with teaching artist Stephen Singer, and I’m so happy with my experience. Stephen is a warm and insightful instructor who gets as excited about the scenes as the actors performing them. The class is structured so everyone is working even if they’re not in the scene: someone will be running camera, another will mark the slate for each take, and then a scripty will be on book for lines and continuity. And for the actors in the scene, we got to do a master shot and then each do our close-ups.
I felt like I was on set every week. My confidence has grown in my on-camera acting and it’s all thanks to Stephen and this class. I highly recommend it.

This is the best acting training I have ever had. The tools taught me how to live moment to moment, relax and have so much fun on stage

I had tried a few different schools but barrow acting school resonated with me the most and i decided to join it due to its simplicity and down to earth environment. I had a thoroughly great time with amazing teachers and friendly classmates! Also provides great opportunities to network outside of the class. Totally recommend this school to join!

Love this place! Very happy here and won't move elsewhere. Great teachers, experienced actors, friendly staff. Besides the classes, there's lots going on all-week and all-year round from performances, free readings, charity auctions and all sorts. I've never felt intimidated at The Barrow Group. A bunch of nice people providing a very good service for actors and audience. Thanks guys!!

I have been to other acting sc...

I have been to other acting schools in NYC for about five years. The Barrow Group is really different, as cliche as that sounds. At other places I was expected to get into the character's psyche, history, environment, plot, playwright's purpose, and relationships - however, in all this, I sometimes felt the acting was more academic and indicative more than personal and 'from the gut'. One of their motto's should be "it's simple stupid" - and not simple in the sense that acting's easy - no, but more in the sense that we don't have to color ourselves with so many intellectual concepts to breathe our characters into life... we simply have to breathe our-selves (Eric Morris reference).

I believe TBG is a great place to take your acting to the next level, especially if you have previous acting training in voice, movement, technique (Stanislavsky, Adler, Meisner, Strasberg, Hagen, et al). I felt the technique I had learned before had become less of a crutch when I approached scenes, and became more subconscious in my acting at TBG. I am looking forward to pursue my career and training in drama here and wholeheartedly recommend people to check it out.
