Glaucoma
Glaucoma is an eye disease which is one of the leading causes of blindness in the United States. Two out of every 100 people over the age of 35 have their vision threatened by this disease. Yet when diagnosed early, blindness from glaucoma is almost always preventable.
Ophthalmology
Dr. Frederick joined The Eye Center Surgeons and Associates as of August 2016, as the newest Ophthalmologist specializing in cornea and anterior segment surgery, as well as general ophthalmology.
Laser Eye Surgery
Refractive Surgery is a procedure used to improve the refractive state of the eye and decrease or eliminate dependency on glasses and contact lenses. This can include various methods of surgical remodelin. The most common methods today use excimer lasers to reshape curvature of the cornea. Successful refractive eye surgery can reduce or cure common vision disorders such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism.
Cataracts
Patients with cataracts see the world as very hazy, because the light cannot pass freely through the lens to be focused on the back of the eye. The only way to remove a cataract is to remove the lens itself.
Cataract Surgery
Cataract surgery is a procedure that removes the cloudy lens from the eye. Today, this procedure can be accomplished very quickly and no stitches are needed. A local anesthetic is used and the surgeon makes a small incision in the outer covering of the eye (conjuctiva). Then a technique called phacoemulsification, removes the lens through the small incision.
Eye Exam
Most commonly, the â€œdrainpipeâ€ can become smaller with age, clogged by deposits which build up slowly. This partial blockage causes a gradual increase of pressure within the eye. This is known as chronic open-angle glaucoma because it develops slowly over a period of time. Most adult glaucoma patients have this type of glaucoma. Chronic open-angle glaucoma can steal vision so quietly that the patient is unaware of trouble until the optic nerve is badly damaged. Because no symptoms occur, the best way to diagnose this form of glaucoma is by periodic medical eye examination.

Dr. Stevens is a native of California. He graduated with highest honors from U.C.L.A. School of Medicine and completed his internal medicine internship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California.
Kidney Stones
However, treatment may occasionally result in unwanted side effects. Some eye drops may sting redden the eye and cause blurring or occasional headaches. Such side effects usually disappear after a few weeks. Though rare, other drops may affect pulse, heartbeat and breathing. Pills sometimes cause tingling of fingers and toes, drowsiness, loss of appetite, bowel irregularities and occasional kidney stone formation. They are usually prescribed only when absolutely necessary. You should notify your ophthalmologist immediately if there is a question of possible side effects.

Dr. Foster is a native of Decatur, Alabama and graduated from Mississippi State University and the University of Alabama School of Medicine. He completed his residency training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Foster serves North Alabama as a comprehensive ophthalmologist and treats a wide variety of eye conditions. His areas of specialization include cataract surgery, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, and eyelid surgery.

Lesions
Many patients present with bothersome lesions around or near their eyes. Most procedures can be performed in the office under local anesthetic with the patient returning home a few minutes after the surgery.
