        The Macon County Sheriff's Office preserves human lives and property, protects public peace and the rights of citizens, prevents crime and disorder and enforces local, county and federal laws. It provides a variety of community services, such as fingerprinting, background checks, bicycle registration, gun permits, and domestic violence and sexual offenses prevention. The Macon County Sheriff's Office supports Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.), which is an international education program that seeks to prevent the usage of illegal drugs, gang activities and violent behavior. The office operates a detention center that is a 75-bed facility and houses pretrial, presentenced, and county- and state-sentenced prisoners. Located in Franklin, N.C., the Macon County Sheriff's Office has a Special Response Team (SRT).
