Teeth Cleaning
It is recommended that everyone have at least two professional dental cleanings per year. These appointments are typically combined with taking routine x-rays. If it is your first visit with us at Atlantic Dental Associates and you have not had a full set of x-rays taken, this is atypically where we will start. This will give us the ability to diagnose any treatment you may require and allow us to see many things we cannot see with our eyes. Knowing every piece of the proverbial puzzle is key in collaborating with you to create a complete and comprehensive treatment plan.
Fluoride Treatment

Fillings
Many people with teeth that have larger silver fillings may have had experience with these tooth fracturing. This is because the silver fillings rely on mechanical retention to stay in place, which often times lead to tooth fracture. White fillings bond to dentin and enamel, pulling the tooth together instead of wedging it apart. Replacing old, worn amalgam fillings before they break is advised.
Resin Composite
An inlay or onlay is like a large filling, except that it is made out of a much more durable ceramic and composite resin hybrid. An inlay is made of this material and involves the restoring of tooth structure that does not include a cusp; an onlay is a restoration made of the hybrid material listed above that does include a cusp.
Veneers
Porcelain veneers are very thin shells of porcelain that cover tooth structure. Very little preparation is necessary, so a maximum amount of tooth structure is conserved. Veneers do have the ability to become dislodged under enough force. If this happens with your veneers, we can discuss options for eliminating this inconvenience.
Crowns
Getting fitted for a crown in our office now only requires one visit! Utilizing the same day crown technology, you can come into our office with a damaged or compromised tooth and walk out with your final restoration! Utilizing the CEREC omnicam with 4.3 software, you no longer have to have impressions taken with the "goo" that patients typically do not enjoy, and you don't have to leave the office with a temporary crown.
Bridges
Crowns and bridges are dental restorations that completely cover a damaged tooth or teeth. They look and function exactly like the natural teeth. We typically use crowns that contain no metal and are completely tooth-colored, inside and out. However, crowns and bridges can be made from porcelain bonded to metal or completely made of gold.
Dental Bonding

Root Canal Treatment
The purpose of root canal treatment is to remove diseased or infected nerve tissue. This procedure allows us to save a tooth that otherwise would have to be extracted. Some indications that you may need a root canal are pain when chewing, or when eating or drinking hot or cold foods or liquids.

Deep Cleaning
After your x-ray are taken, we will determine the type of cleaning you require. Most patients require a traditional cleaning. However, some patients who have not been under dental care for a period of time may require a deep cleaning, also known as scaling and root planing. It is also possible that we may need to do a special cleaning so that we can see your teeth better in an effort to resolve any treatment concerns or questions you may have; this cleaning is considered a "debridement".

Dentures
The implants themselves are titanium posts that are placed into the jawbone where teeth are missing. The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for the implant crown, bridge, partial denture, or complete denture.

Gum Surgery
Typically when patients think of periodontics, they think of gum surgery or implants; and that is correct to a certain extent. In our office we provide you with the opportunity to manage or treat your gingivitis and periodontal disease with our professional dental cleaning regimens. If you are not responding to the treatments that we can provide you in our office, we may need to refer you to a specialist for further evaluation. When necessary, our office recommends working with a dental specialist to obtain the best results from periodontic procedures. Tooth Extractions
Following a dental extraction, it is normal to experience light bleeding of the extraction socket. Placing a piece of moist gauze over the extraction site and bite down firmly for 30 minutes to control this. A blood clot will form in the socket: please be careful not to dislodge it. Do not use a straw to drink following your extraction to avoid dislodging the clot. It is an important part of the healing process.
Bone Grafting
After a tooth has been extracted there will be a hollow area in your jawbone where the tooth was removed. We recommend that bone grafting be done at the time of extraction to avoid further bone loss and preserve bone for future implant placement.

Just let us know at any appointment if you would like to begin whitening your teeth. We have multiple whitening options for you. Our first whitening option is the one most patients choose. It's simple and effective! As a dental health care facility, we are able to offer you prescription strength teeth whitening strips. These are the same strength as the older whitening trays, but are more convenient and more affordable. If you opt for the traditional bleaching, or you do not achieve the results you were hoping for with the strips, then we can begin fabricating traditional whitening trays for you.

Dr. Fowler received her professional education and training from leading institutions throughout the southeast. She graduated with a Bachelors degree in Psychology from the University of Virginia. She then earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the Medical College of Virginia where she graduated in the top of her class. She went on to complete her residency training in Advanced Education in General Dentistry at the Medical University of South Carolina, serving as chief resident.
