General Info
Governed by the state of Texas, The Texas General Land Office was established in 1836 to manage several acres of land and provide maps and surveys. Today, it is responsible for managing more than 20 million acres of state land and mineral properties. The office is also responsible for the management of a portfolio of beaches, bays and estuaries in the Gulf of Mexico region in the United States, as well as institutional acreages, grazing pastures and commercial sites in urban areas throughout Texas. It leases drilling rights for oil and gas production on state-owned land and provides the generated revenues and royalties to state's Permanent School Fund. The Texas General Land Office also administers Recycling, Adopt-A-Beach, Coastal, and Oil Spill Prevention and Response programs. Additionally, its archives and records division maintains original Spanish, Mexican and Republic of Texas land grants and associated documentations.
