Ear Infections

Ruthie Senders MSN, APRN, FNP joined our practice in 2021 as an advice nurse after serving in a similar capacity in a large New York City pediatric practice. Click Here. The take home message is that flight crews worldwide, astronauts in space flight exposed to cosmic radiation and radiologists and radiology techs and dentists and dental techs exposed to medical radiation would benefit from eating a diet high in beta carotene, cryptoxanthin and lutein-zeaxanthin.

Another source of free radicals comes from medical procedures. X rays of teeth and extremities are well under.01 mSv, and mammograms are generally under 0.5 mSv. Bone scans are 6.3 mSv. But the most ionizing radiation comes from CT scans. A CT scan of the abdomen looking for appendicitis is 1-10 mSv and one of the CT scans following a concussion is 1-5 mSv depending on the duration and the number of views. Click Here.

Skin Cancer
Exposure to cosmic radiation is not benign for flight personnel. Older studies in flight attendants and airplane pilots have shown increased associations of certain cancers from occupational exposure to CIR with evidence of a dose response relationship for melanoma. A more recent study that compared cancer diagnoses reported by flight attendants and those reported by individuals of the same sex and socioeconomic status in non-flying occupations found “a higher prevalence of every cancer outcome relative to the general population including breast, uterine, cervical, gastrointestinal, thyroid, melanoma and non-melanoma cancers.” The longer flight attendants were on the job, the greater the risk of skin cancer.
